Hey, what d'ya know, yet another Mac Minecraft player who THINKS they're using Java 7 to play Minecraft, but instead they are using Java 6!
Mr. Johnson, please see this bug report for more information: https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MCL-1049
Mojang is using a deprecated app bundler to package Minecraft. It requires Java 6 to run, even if you have Java 7 installed. Check that bug report for a workaround.
If I had to guess, the 10.9.1 update scrambled something with Java. The error report mentioned PluginManager. I would not be surprised if more people are going to have this issue.
Note: I am also running 10.9.1, but there are no issues with the launcher or client using Java 7.

Reinstalling the application fixed the issue.

Good. Which Java is being used?
