[MCL-20288] Client crashes while downloading game versions before launch

The client seems to have a roughly 50% chance of crashing just before it launches - according to the output log, while it installs versions.
I've updated my graphics driver but the problem persists.
Deleting and redownloading the game version (1.17.1) doesn't fix it.

MC-20220 is a completely different bug. Its solution is to update Java, which I already have and the problem still persists. There's also the possibility of being caused by malware, but McAfee and Malwarebytes haven't detected anything.
