Each time I start the official minecraft launcher it takes minutes to check the version and download an update, without ever changing the launcher version.
This issue happens regardless of whether the Launcher beta is enabled or not.

Does this issue occur on beta version of the Launcher?
Do you have enough free space on your disc drive?
Have you tried reinstalling the Launcher?
Have you tried deleting .minecraft folder (copying it elsewhere beforehand)?
Could you provide us with more in-depth repro steps?
