1.) Delete %appdata%\.minecraft
2.) downloading a completely fresh, latest version of minecraft.exe from mojang
3.) Run minecraft.exe and it says it loads the default profile but throws an invalid password exception.
It does not even let me enter a password anywhere. The error occurs BEFORE I enter a username or password. I launch minecraft.exe and it goes straight to this exception.
My concern is that you'll see the word "password" and tell me to go reset it or something, so I want to once again underline the point that this happens on a brand-new fresh install of minecraft, with no pre-existing profile information, and I am not even able to enter my credentials. It is a BUG.
Thank you

You are awful at your job. I guess I'm just out of luck and can no longer play the game I paid for, huh?
No, you just don't know what his job is. The people here are not paid to help you fix your problem (most of them are volunteers, and they aren't paid at all), but they are here to identify problems with the game's code, and organize information about them so that the developers can fix them.
Despite appearances, this is a bug tracker, not a support system. Its purpose is to collect, organize, and track the status of bugs within the game – that is, problems which occur because of the game's code, rather than external influences.
Because this problem appears to be extremely limited in occurrence (it doesn't appear to be happening to anyone else, and someone else following your instructions did not experience it), it's most likely a problem with your computer, rather than the game's code. It still could be a problem with the game, but it will take some troubleshooting to determine for sure.
However, there are people who can help you. They just aren't here. Troubleshooting steps and places to find help are listed at the Mojang Support Center.
I ended up using the open source alternative launcher and it worked flawlessly. Same system, same Java installation, same minecraft.jar. I guess that indicates the problem lies within your launcher but you'll never get to the root of it since for all you care the issue is "resolved". I'm glad for your sake that this isn't happening to more people. You can safely sweep it under the rug until it pops up again unexpectedly.
Thanks for the advice about going to the support center.

P.S. At the very LEAST you should treat the fact that the password exception goes unhandled as a bug. I can only assume you have bigger fish to fry than unhandled crashes to desktop, but I'd think it would warrant a ticket in the queue. Anyway, I got the game working so you can just take this as a small piece of advice.
And does this unnamed open source alternative launcher store all the files in the same location as the official launcher? Does it handle authentication in a secure way?
Just because one piece of software works in a certain environment, and another doesn't, doesn't mean that the behavior of the latter software is incorrect. It may seem less desirable for the user, but may work in situations where the other software does not, or may be more reliable or secure.
Ideally, all unexpected behavior should be handled gracefully, and the user should be given comprehensible instructions on how to solve the problem. Unfortunately, Mojang has not made that a very high priority, often choosing to crash the software to prevent damage to user data, rather than handle the problem gracefully.
This is a reflection of their development process, and the style of the game. While Minecraft is appealing to a wide range of people, it's definitely very raw, designed with a "hardcore" market in mind, with very little hand-holding. You're dropped into a world, and given no instructions. Not even a list of controls. The expectation is that if you're playing that sort of game, you're capable of figuring things out for yourself.
