I ended up using the open source alternative launcher and it worked flawlessly. Same system, same Java installation, same minecraft.jar. I guess that indicates the problem lies within your launcher but you'll never get to the root of it since for all you care the issue is "resolved". I'm glad for your sake that this isn't happening to more people. You can safely sweep it under the rug until it pops up again unexpectedly.

P.S. At the very LEAST you should treat the fact that the password exception goes unhandled as a bug. I can only assume you have bigger fish to fry than unhandled crashes to desktop, but I'd think it would warrant a ticket in the queue. Anyway, I got the game working so you can just take this as a small piece of advice.
