Does not save username field

an old version in my .minecraft indicates the launcher to pre-fill username field to not include the full email address

What I expected to happen:
When I relaunch the launcher it will save whatever I changed in the username field earlier (i.e. *** to **@**.com)

What happened instead:
When I relaunch the launcher it will always display *** and ignores previous changes.
