When attempting to install the official Minecraft Launcher on a Chromebook using the Linux Development Environment, the installation fails because a required dependency cannot be installed.
Steps to Reproduce:
Download the official Minecraft Launcher .deb package from http://minecraft.net .
Open the Linux terminal on a Chromebook.
Run:
sudo apt install ./Minecraft.deb
Expected Result:
The Minecraft Launcher installs successfully and can be launched.
Actual Result:
Installation fails with dependency errors:
Note, selecting 'minecraft-launcher' instead of './Minecraft.deb'
Solving dependencies... Error!
Unsatisfied dependencies:
minecraft-launcher : Depends: libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 (>= 2.22.0) but it is not installable
Error: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
Additional Information:
This issue appears to affect Chromebook Linux environments using newer Debian releases. The required package "libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0" is not available in the repositories, causing the official Minecraft Launcher package to be uninstallable.
Environment:
Device: Chromebook
Operating System: ChromeOS Linux Development Environment (Crostini)
Package Manager: APT
Installation Method: Official Minecraft .deb package
Suggested Resolution:
Update the launcher package dependencies to support newer Debian versions used by Chromebook Linux environments, or provide an alternative package that does not rely on unavailable legacy dependencies.
