"unknown error" when running Minecraft.msi

Moderator note

  • This issue may be caused by Antivirus / Firewall / bad Proxy / Parental control software or malware.

  • Workaround: Use the "old" Launcher:

    • Go to https://minecraft.net/download

    • Klick on Show all platforms

    • Follow the instructions:

      Minecraft for Windows (alternative)

If you have issues with the new Windows download, you can try the old one by downloading Minecraft.exe. If given the option, save the file instead of running it. Save the file anywhere you'd like, then double-click the program to run. This does require Java to be installed, however.

    • Download the latest Java version from http://www.java.com/en/download/. (When using a 32-bit browser on a 64-bit operating system the automatic version detection will only show the 32-bit version of Java, the 64-bit version needs to be downloaded manually: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp )

just installed minecraft and before the launcher popes up it claims there is an unknown error. this error apparently comes from the mine craft launcher as that is what the program is called in the bar. please help

Please provide a screenshot.

Is that the new "Installer" or the "regular" Launcher downloaded from https://minecraft.net/download ?

the download was from https://minecraft.net/download windows Minecraft.msi

Can you try Minecraft.exe from the same download location ?

Seems the new launcher is giving an "unknown error" for some people.

Running java -jar minecraft.exe from command prompt returns: Error: Invalid or corrupt jarfile minecraft.exe

Running the old minecraft.exe or the .jar file works just fine.

The popup when I try to open minecraft.exe

Hello, I used to have the same problem as you guys.
Seeing as how the mod failed to help, I hope that this works for you. This seems to be a problem with the new launcher, but the old launcher should still work even if the new one fails. Make sure you have the correct version of Java (http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp) downloaded for your system (32 or 64 bit depending on your OS) and use the old launcher as still available here (https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/launcher/Minecraft.exe).

If your not interested in using the old launcher, you can try the JAR launcher that should work with the correct Java installation, available here. (https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/launcher/Minecraft.jar)

I hope this works for you theirs not all that much I can think of. You can just drag the Minecraft.Jar Download to your desktop and use that to load up minecraft. Until Mojang finds a fix to this problem I hope this works!

My apology's, I had no intention of spam I just figured i'd help everyone who posted a👎 error.

This should now be fixed.
