Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft Launcher version 2.0.805 / 2.0.806? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases. If this has been done, we can reopen the issue.

Hi. Just got the same error. Any suggestions?

Cannot reproduce.

For what it's worth, I had this issue and did a little bit of digging into it. In my scenario, I had a previous install of Minecraft, but recently had the hard drive it was installed on die, and had to reinstall it on a different hard drive. After receiving this error when both trying to uninstall the nonexistent old version and when trying to install a new version, I opened regedit and proceed to use the "Find" tool to delete any reference of "Minecraft or Mojang." I'm sure there's a more precise way of doing this, but brute forcing it this way seemed to work after a restart, and I was able to install as normal.

Hey guys I've been getting this error still. The situation Incarnate describes is the same for me - HDD dies with old install on it, trying to install with a new HDD. I'm going to go ahead and use their fix but before I do I thought I'd give some extra info about the situation as having a CD (or any disk at all) inserted changes some behavior:
Executing the installer with a CD inserted lets me get to this screen:

And using either function gives me this:

I don't have a blank CD to see what happens if there actually is space to use unfortunately ;c

Super weird stuff. Hope this helps in some way

I'm currently having the problem installing the latest version of Minecraft. I have tried to delete all instances of Minecraft and Mojang but they haven't worked, I've tried changing the file names and locations. I don't know what version of Minecraft it is considering I can't even install it so.

I have been able to run Minecraft using the alternative download from Mojang. Here is the link to the alternative download: https://minecraft.net/en-us/download/alternative
