I was playing Minecraft with my brother for around 3 hours and suddenly Minecraft crashed, displaying the message 'software closed because an error occurred'. We joined back onto the world to discover that our inventory had the updated items in, however our game progress hadn't saved; meaning the past three hours was worthless.
