Unable to collect diamonds, iron, coal, red stone etc.
while mining I found 5 diamond and tons of iron and coal.
Went to build more pic axes and saw that my inventory had no iron
Then I noticed all it had was junk stone and stuff with extra slots open

Hi Laura, sorry to have to ask some really simple question, but I want to be sure:
What type of pickaxes were you using to mine the diamonds, redstone, iron and coal and did they have any enchantments? Pickaxes go up in strength from wood to stone, iron, gold and finally diamond. To collect diamonds or redstone, you must use an iron pickaxe or better (gold or diamond being "better"). To collect iron ore or coal you must use at least a stone pickaxe.
Next question, when you mined these blocks, did they drop items (i.e. diamonds, redstone dust, iron ore or coal) as items and you could then pick them up with your player?
Final question, from your comment "Went to build more pic axes" I presume you are in a survival game? If in creative, you couldn't build pickaxes and you cannot collect items or resources that you mine.
