[MCPE-119775] Cannot play with son

For months my son and I cannot join each other's world and we cannot figure out why when we used to all the time. he shows playing when we sign in and it says connecting to world but then eventually times out. What changed and/or are we doing wrong. Why can I see him as a friend when he is playing but we cannot join?
