I had a horse with gold armor, it was fast and could jump four blocks. We were looking around for some villages, and I made it jump so it wouldn't take as long to get across the river. When it went under it kicked me off (like usual.) I turned around to push it to land, and it was gone. I swam around (left-clicking) to see if it was just invisible, but the horse wasn't there.
