So, I put down an item frame, and it is invisible. You can put an item in it though!
@unknown added:
Steps to reproduce
-Be sure to open your game fresh. (I'm using a creative map.)
-Place an Item Frame on the wall.
-Place an item inside the Item Frame.
-Press the home or sleep button on your device.
-Return to the game and you will notice how the Item Frame disappeared showing just the item on the wall.

I'll add my findings to this bug rather than create a new.
Here are the steps I have found to reliably reproduce an invisible item frame:
(Tested on Samsung TabPro SM-T520 in Creative mode)
1. Make sure minecraft isn't running in background (force close if running)
2. Start Minecraft and load world
3. Place item frame and insert item
4. Fly
5. Press the power button (but not hold; you want to lock, not shut down)
6. Unlock device to return to Minecraft
7. Item frames are invisible, and the items are still in place
Screenshot attached.
