Nether Coordinate Bug

While playing on a world, a friend went through a nether portal at around the coordinates of -8500 1500 (overworld), and instead of appearing at the usual correct coordinates they spawned in at the same coordinates as the overworld portal, but in the nether. There was no portal in the nether when they loaded in.
