Did you do anything just before entering the portal, such as sleeping, accessing a container, etc?
Was the initial portal working before or was this the first time you tried to use it?
This ticket has been temporarily closed as Awaiting Response. It will automatically reopen when you add information.

I access chests normally. I've had it most often on a new portal but just now did it on a portal that I've used several times before

I am not convinced my error is the same as this topic. I am not transported to the same coordinates in overworld as in the nether. I am transported to the wrong coordinates going both ways, but the error is not equal to a multiple or factor of 8. Moreover, the magnitude of the error is different in the X and Z axes. Additionally, my error was never encountered prior to the 1.16.210 update. Therefore, I suspect my error and the one dating from January are likely distinct.

First time it happened for me was yesterday after downloading update. Surface world portal portal took me to area over 800 blocks away from my Nether portal for that location. A long established portal used often. Save/quitting and reloading did not help and I had to delete world and load copy in order for the portal to go back to normal. The second time it happened was teleporting from the Nether to the surface world from different portal. The portal should have taken me to base and is my most used portal but took it me west over 1000 blocks away into chunk I wasn't trying to open yet inside an unexplored cave. Again I had to delete world and load copy for portal to go back to regular location. Neither time when it teleported me to wrong location was there a nether portal nearby to return but that doesn't matter as I don't want those chunks open until the mountain/cave updates. When they throw me into unopened chunk I delete world automatically and load copy sacrificing any progress.

The first time it happened I had been shearing sheep and harvesting animals then entered the portal to go the the Nether and return to base. The 2nd time I had just got done fighting the Wither and also just deconstructed large 6 beacon pyramid I was using in the area and went to port to base on the surface world and ended up in unexplored cave to the west. The only common activity I can think of for both occasions is opening ender chests and skulker chests and entering the portal and none of it happened before yesterday's update.

This happened to my friend in the realm when he teleported from the overworld to the nether at the exact coordinates. I tested each portal, and I encountered the same issue 3 times already.
Could anyone who's managed to reproduce this bug upload the affected world(s) here? If it exceeds the file size limit, you can upload it elsewhere and link it here.

I am having similar issues starting last night after updating the game and server. I am on a vanilla server with no cheats enabled and no plug-ins, so I cannot give exact coordinates, but using over world maps, I am VERY far away from my linked nether portals. One additional thing that I did have happen is that sometimes it sends me to the right portal, sometimes it doesn't. If it doesn't send me to the right place (nether portal), then the first time I arrive in the wrong nether area there is no portal. The most recent occurrence of this was approximately 10 minutes ago. I did eventually find 1 obsidian block in the ground (top layer), and when I stood on that it sent me back (like a portal) to the over world portal that I originally used. When I went back through the portal to test it further, I was sent to the correct linked portal and not the new area. Last night when using a different linked portal the nether-to-over world portal link worked fine, but the over world-to-nether did not.
These were existing portals linked on both the over world and the nether. I did nothing immediately prior to, or while entering the portal (no eating, interacting with anything, etc.)

@Kevin Neal,
Showing coordinates isn't classed as a "cheat". It's in normal game settings. Server Manger can goto the console and type "gamerule showcoordinates true" and it'll show up for all players.

Hello Weronika. Here's a Google Drive link to a PS4 save file in which this bug happened recently.
I should mention, my report got tagged as duplicate of this one, but the second bug occurence on my report differs slightly from this as it was not just an issue with coordinates value division by 8, but also a portal linking to another very distant, already existing portal without coordinate correlation. This particular bug occurence keeps happening.
See report for details.
Hope this helps.

Ok, I exited the portal, and it also happened from the nether to the overworld. Same coordinates as well. Attached are the videos that compare this glitch. The second video worked normally, but the first one did not correctly send me back to the main spawn.

Had a similar issue where I entered a portal and came out in the nether, no portal visible, nowhere near where I should be. And it wasn’t the exact coords of the overworld either. Logged out and back in, portal suddenly reappeared, went though and rather than go back to my overworld base, I went 15k blocks out. Again, nowhere near any base coords on our realm.

I reported this issue on MCPE-120454
two of our players immediately after the update got glitched into nether coordinates that matched their overworld coordinates but immediately after the error wasnt repeated. We've been using portals since and they seem fine.

Thank you so much! Everything I had seen and read said that I had to enable cheats to get coordinates. Unfortunately I'm the Server Manager and apparently I'm dumb.

Unfortunately I tried it again, but the new portal did not connect to the old portal; it went to somewhere in the over world but far far away. I didn't turn on coordinates until just now. Another member of the server went through a nether portal and it dropped him in a lake (thankfully) near the start location (just now).

My son (PE on phone) and realm owner (Bedrock on xbox) and I (Bedrock on Xbox) dealt with this last night; all portals that we entered were established portals that had been being used frequently for weeks; my son and I entered the nether portal at spawn, neither of us had opened chests or done anything else before that, I used an ender chest that was in our Nether hub but my son did not, we went through our tunnel back to our personal hub, him and I entered our portal at the same time, I came out where I should at my base he appeared in a field about a thousand blocks away with no portal anywhere in sight. My realm owner came to my base to investigate and went into my portal but ended up in the nether at another player's hub who's base is about 4000 overworld blocks away, he came out of the nether there and was at that player's base so TPed back to me and went back into my nether portal, I followed him and we both ended up at my nether hub, we both went back through and were both at my base again.

same thing as MCPE-39147 from previous updates.

Same thing happens on my Dedicated Server after updating to 1.16.210.05

Hi, I have been redirected here. Yesterday I entered my nether portal from the overworld to a safe location used many times and encased in a room so no chance of ghast damage. I ended up in a totally random location miles away from my destination. I know I was East, and a long way as I had a map so tried to locate the intended portal. I found a bastion and fortress along the way, then died. When I went back through, I entered where I should have done. I proceeded to try and find the fortress and headed off a very long way to find nothing. I gave up in the end. However, today, I have just entered another of my portals, also in a safe location with a building surrounding it so no ghast damage. I have again been dumped in a totally random location right next to a fortress. I am in Bedrock, Win 10, survival normal, multi (rarely). What makes it worse is I have no map this time so will likely have to die to return, and on both occasions I am not given a return portal. 12/13.03.21

Hi again, I have just done some investigating using copies of my world and turning on coordinates. This first image shows the location of the actual portal in its Nether position, as you can see it is in a safe place with no Ghast issues. Please note this is the issue described as today's. Yesterday was a different portal but the same issue - same game - same player.
[media]
This is where I have been sent - I have moved a small distance maybe 20 or so blocks. As you can see I am around 3200 blocks away although only really affected by the first coordinate.
[media]
Thank you, hope it helps so it can be resolved.

I have this problem too. Other players on the same server don't see the issue, but me playing on windows 10 get it frequently. Seems uninstalling and reinstalling the Minecraft bedrock client temporarily solves the problem

I an running the dedicated server on Ubuntu and have been having this issue sine the client update to 1.16.210.
I am farily sure that this started happening before the server was updated to the latest version.
It is not consistant though. I have been through portals to the correct location but it also gets it wrong within the same play session.
I am a currently about 9000 blocks out in the nether working my way home.

Was redirected here from a duplicate. This happened to my friend on my single/two player world a couple days ago, and like many others he was dropped in the Nether with no portal nearby. Last night the same thing happened to me but a portal WAS spawned on my arrival - leading to a location in the ten thousands in the overworld. After I made my way back I checked the coordinates and it does appear that the portal just decided to spawn at the overworld coords instead of the linked nether coords. This is especially worrying on PS4, because we have numerous unresolved bugs that cause worlds to become completely unplayable if too much is explored.
PS4 slim, disc version of game, updated to 1.16.210. This did not happen prior to the 9 March 2021 update.

I was playing on my friend's realm on Xbox One S, friend on Series X, and he was going to show me a farm he was working on, so we went into the nether portal to get there, except I did not end up in the expected existing portal in the nether, as the game did not convert my coords.
I wasn't doing anything inside the portal going in and he was sent to the correct location so we could not figure out why I wasn't. The game continued to run as normal afterwards until the server randomly kicked everyone out and reverted to just after I had flown to the correct location, which was set back quite far from when the crash occurred.
This happened on the night of March 10, 2021. Nobody else on the realm has had this happen to them since that incident at the time of writing.

From my experience, this is rare. It happened to my friend twice but never to me

This happens every time for me. Both with nether and end portals. Game breaking

This has happened to me 2x in the past week on PS4. I only have 1 portal and twice it has taken me somewhere random in the nether thousands of blocks away from my portal, without giving me a portal to get back. My last game I had to use cheats to get back, this game i found my way back eventually

I just had the same issue with my game on PS4. I created a nether portal and it dropped me at the overworld co-ordinates in the nether with no portal. I quit and when I came back into the game a nether portal appeared which took me back to the correct original co-ordinates in the overworld. Going into the nether once more from this location spawned a new portal in the correct location. This doesn't always work and going back from the nether will put me 8X blocks away.

PS4, and I’ve had this three times over the last week.
First time was going from the Overworld to the Nether; no portal spawned on the Nether side, and it was a long walk/mine back.
Second time was also going from the Overworld to the Nether. Weirdly this time a portal spawned, but I didn’t dare use it. Conveniently of course I’d already mined out a route back to my base!
Last time was from Nether to Overworld. I got lucky though, because those coordinates happened to be about 50 blocks from my original spawn point in the world, so it was just a short walk (once I’d managed to get down from the tree) to get to my original base where I had a donkey tied up. Of course if this happens again I’ll have to walk all the way home.

I have this issue hunting my survival world. Basically people are afraid to play and are dropping off the server.
I’ve got about 7 months old world on my server and there are plenty of portals. some of them are like 250k blocks from world origin so the distances are quite significant when you end up in the wrong location.

I had a new variation on this issue yesterday. I used my OW portal and it took me to the wrong place in the nether as expected. Then I was looking around and I was portaled to a new OW location even though there was no portal in the nether where I was. It was within a few secs of my arrival in the nether.

I have been experiencing this bug on my server since the 1.16.210 update, making using any nether portals or end gates unreliable or dangerous. I was hopeful when I saw that the BDS software had gotten an update (1.16.210.06), but it does not seem to have resolved this issue. I and my players are anxious to get this sorted out. On a local copy of the server world, I can see that I am being transported to the wrong location and then quickly moved to the correct one, but on the server, it only ever transports me to the wrong location. I am looking for a report on the BDS bug tracker as well.

https://twitter.com/crunchybag3229/status/1373430906418032641?s=21
I also experienced this last night while streaming and so did 3 others all on the same realm, Iv clipped the bit it messes up

I copied my Win10 Bedrock Dedicated Server over to a VM with 1 core/2 threads on a weak pc running linux (since BDS is laggy AF on linux).
Now this has started happening a LOT on that server, but the original copy running on my gaming PC doesn't have a single issue.
Seems like was already suggested, some calculations aren't being completed & somehow it just continues to load to the incorrect destination.
Fast Server = No Problem,
Slow Server = Guaranteed problems!

[media]- Take me to the Trading Hall

I did get the same problem when playing with my friend.
We fixed this by breaking both portals him breaking the one in the ow and me breaking the one in the nether and then by making a new one in the nether it worked properly basicly you must make the portals in the nether

I'm having the same issue, I lost so much stuff and its maki g finding a nether fortress impossible
The original overworld portal puts me at the original nether portal, or after a hoglin came though it put me at a second portal in the nether, which drops you 20 blocks above a lava sea on one side and soild rock the other.
If you reenter portal 2, it takes you to over world portal 2 which is 2600ish blocks away on the x axis and 70 above the never ending sea , that leads you to portal 3 nether which is 2600 blocks into the nether, re enter that I get dropped at overworld portal 3 in a swamp 16000 blocks away. Re enter that I go to the nether 16000 blocks away from zero. Here there's no portal visible. Also my bubble meter starts and stops. But if I stand where I am spawned I return to overworld.
Overworld 255 72 95
First nether 29 74 11
Second nether 260 45 110
Currently I will enter overworld 1, go to nether portal 2, walk to nether portal one and return to overworld 1.
But...I found out that portal facing matters. If I enter east facing it will reverse the process listed, west entry will make it bigger and bigger jumps

@Petar, I broke my nether portal and rebuilt it (pretty much first thing I did as I didn’t like the location). This still happens for me.
@Scott, that seems reasonable. I wonder if the calculation is running in a different thread, but the main code isn’t waiting for it to complete?

It affects 1.16.210.06 as well
Happens totally random. Sometimes a portal works as it should other time it is not.
My world is over 7 months old and has lot of portals.
world seed: 720057903
I'm running a vanilla, linux server. My world has never been tempered with in any world editor. It has some cursed chunks that kick out a player when they go there, but we just simply fenced the area and avoid going there. But this portal thing is big. It’s impossible to tell where you end up so using portals is useless at this point. No nether access basically. It affects the End Portal as well.
I just quickly created a random, local world on my ps4 and couldn’t reproduce the bug. I tried the realms as well but there is no creative mode and I haven’t obtained obsidian yet 😉.
here are some examples:
join our Discord if u r interested in following up on our struggle lol: https://discord.gg/wmwG8p5

This happened to me in my world too. My coordinates are 4800 and -180 so it was a long hard trip to save myself and now i’m on a harder 38 thousand block trip back. Might use the nether to get back idk tho.

Apparently my issue is the same and warranted a resolved status on my concern.. doubtful because my issue is a bit different, but okay..
Anyways, I'm having this issue with Nether Portals linking. Put simply, the first time I go through the portal every time I log in (whether it's from the Nether side or Overworld side), it always creates a new one quite a ways away from the one I made. Every subsequent portalling after that always go to the correct Portals. So just the first use per session.
Details that may help:
Overworld Portal (225, 61, 400)ish
Nether Portal (23, 75, 51)
So by my knowledge, that is darn close enough for the game to find it everytime. Yet it has taken me to these locations..
Nether -> Overworld (21, 64, 58)
Nether -> Overworld (31, 78, 41)
Overworld -> Nether (220, 64, 408)
As you can see, these are way off. How a Portal in Overworld at 221, 61, 400 ends up in the Nether at 220, 64, 408? It's not thousands or 10s of thousands as OP is mentioning, but still an annoying walk. It's almost as if game is calculating the x8?
I've tried breaking and rebuilding, to no avail. Only thing I can think of is either this is a bug in current version, or bedrock isn't kind with custom Portals? My Overworld Portal is about 15-20 blocks tall, and 3 wide.

Likely due to incorrect (double?) or skipped calculation of some sort during an autosave. @unknown this is an issue with any type of nether portal, not just custom (large) portals.

This has happened several times to various players in the realm I'm playing in, in both directions. I've turned up in the overworld at the same coordinates from which I left the nether, and I've been dropped into the nether several thousand blocks from anything. This last time I put down an ender chest to put away my stuff to go die, and a quarter (yes, really, 1/4) of a portal appeared. I managed to build it up to a full portal but it wouldn't light, even after breaking and rebuilding it...
[media][media]
Had this problem on my PS4 the other day; went through a new end portal 14000 blocks away and went 14000 blocks in the end. Went through a nether portal 14000 blocks today, that I have used many times and it took me to same coordinates as the overworld in the nether.

MCPE-123204 says that flying with an elytra into the portal reproduces this reliably. I can confirm that this is at least one way to reproduce the issue.
Additionally, sometimes the nether starts to show on screen (overworld chunks disappear and nether-toned sky appears) before the Building Terrain screen. When this happens, the coordinates are correct, but after the loading screen the spawning area is incorrect. This may or may not be related.

This problem is becoming more and more frequent. Not only has it happened to friends, but also content creators. For one of my friends, he wasn't eating or doing anything. The nether took a little longer to load and then placed my friend 200 blocks away, far away from any portal. Other people have been placed thousands of blocks away.

I agree with Tis4Truth, the more my son and I play the more frequent this is now occurring. We have a realm so that he is able to play with many of friends who are all on different platforms. The real problem with our world is our portal, when glitched, dumps us straight down into a deep ocean of lava and without enchanted armor with protection 4, you die before making it anywhere near "land".
I did come across one person who posted a video that he is able to consistently recreate it by during night, placing a bed in front of the portal, enter the portal and just before it transitions try to sleep. He doesn't explain how he figured that out, but he only wanted to so that he could build covered bridges back to his main portal. Since this is happening more, I'll probably try this out and do the same thing.

If the hitbox is changed when sleeping, that could signal at least changing/non-regular hitboxes resulting in the bug. This may be a direct or indirect cause. However, I could not reproduce this bug with swimming.
Also, when you are teleported to the incorrect coordinates, a portal does generate, but it is invisible until you deliver block updates to the area/reload the chunks/relog.

I'm running a server for family and friends. We were just about to make some of the more advanced farms and nether highways, but due to this bug we have all but stopped playing 😢

Okay, maybe this one is the weirdest bug. After I finally got to my nether hub, I was trying to go back to the overworld. the portal teleported me to the walls. and I died instantly. I don't know the teleport coordinates, so I lose all my items.
Hope this bug fixed in the next update.

I suspect this is due to the player entering the portal while the world is autosaving/backing up, so to reduce incidence, turn on the Show Autosave Icon option and wait for an autosave to finish before entering any type of portal.

I believe I have found a workaround for this bug. Throw an item through the portal, e.g., cooked porkchop (worked for me) or a boat and you will pick it up when you get to the other side. You should only have to do this trick once and the portal will work fine again until whatever the issue is causes the portals to desync again.
I've only done this a few times since I discovered it so let us know if it doesn't work for your situation

I could confirm the same issue for Bedrock Windows 10 version 1.16.220 with a portal used many times without any problems until today (in the world played for the last 3-4 months - most probably it was created with version 1.16.201). I entered the portal in the overworld at coordinates 335,82,-95. The portal is normally linked to the one in Nether at coordinates around 29,71,-12 and was working reliably until now. However, this time I appeared in Nether at coordinates 335,87,-95 (i.e. more-less the same coordinates as its overworld counterpart).
The minor issue (besides the troubles with the incorrect position of the portal) was that the newly created portal in the nether (the unexpected one) - was not shown. The portal was probably there since the block of obsidian appeared after an attempt to place another block at the position where the portal was located. After the reload of the game whole portal was shown correctly.
I entered the portal a few minutes after the game was started and there were quite unpleasant lags - the game was slowed down few times for few seconds with stopped graphics. Even the transfer from the overworld to the nether took an unusually long time. Thus maybe it could be indeed related to some autosave as discussed above.
Extra notes: The issue described above appeared shortly after the game was started. After the start of MC there was shown a message on an update to 1.16.220. However, the same issue happened to another player in the same world mentioned above (accessed via LAN multiplayer from Bedrock for Android version most probably still v. 1.16.210) a few hours before the update at host game at Win 10 was loaded. In this case, it was much less convenient - the player entered the overworld roughly at coordinates 1544,77,-670 and was thrown in the nether to -1930, 107,327. After the next use of the portal, the player appeared at skyblock with x coordinated around 15500. However, also in this case it happened few minutes after the game was started.

Interestingly, I cannot reproduce this on a Flat world using the elytra method, but I can reproduce easily with the same method on an Infinite world.

I was just redirected here. Same issue is happening with me but it only happens when i first load in. anyone have any tips or things that would fix this?

I don’t wanna rush conclusions but since 1.16.220.02 we haven't experienced the issue anymore!
On top of that my 8 months world has never been running so smoothly before!! No lag whatsoever.
BIG TY Mojang devs!
I suspect the portal bug might have been happening due to the server overload (which in my case is evident as running my server on an old MacMini lol) and since there was a significant improvement in performance the bug hasn’t had a chance to appear yet.

Wish I could agree with the above, but it just happened to me again yesterday right after installing the latest patch. So it definitely still exists.

Entering the nether, you can be transported to you overworld coordinates instead of the correct nether coordinates.
As of 1.16.220 this is has now started doing the opposite as well.
Leaving the nether, you can be transported to the nether coordinates instead of the correct overworld coordinates.
In both instances you can either be dropped off without a nether portal or with.
The issue is also present with the end portal too where upon entering the end you can be dropped into the void.

I play on a PS4. I’m having this same issue w the portals transporting me to the same X/Z as the OW coordinates I was at but I was not having this issue prior to the 1.16.220 update.
I’ve had it happen both ways - going into the Nether AND coming out of it. coming out of it, twice, I’ve been dropped from the sky. Luckily, I was dropped into the ocean both times.
Sometimes a return portal is there & sometimes one isn’t. The 3rd time it happened, I wasn’t able to start trying to find my way back right then so I saved & exited. There hadn’t been a return portal. When I re-entered, there was a return portal. I didn’t go into it bc I was so far away & need to save new terrain loads for the 1.17 release. The next time it happened, I was leaving the Nether & was teleported to a cave, with no return portal having spawned - that I could see. I took a few steps forward to look around & when I backed up again, I was teleported back to the Nether even though there had been no visible portal there. This, coupled w the other portal appearing after I’d saved & returned, leads me to believe that return portals may be spawning each time & just aren’t visible for some reason. Please note that when I was teleported back to the Nether, I did NOT return to the portal I’d come from, but a different one within my hub. I’m sure that’s expected given that I’d been teleported so far.
Hopefully this can be resolved quickly. It’s extremely disruptive. Thanks team!! 💐

This is one way to reproduce (there are other ways):
Steps to reproduce
Create a nether portal
Equip an Elytra
Using your elytra, fly into the portal (try not to land on the ground)
<Note from @unknown:
[media]is set up for the above steps in either creative or survival mode. In survival you need to fly into the portal at a sideways angle so that you are still mostly in it when the cobwebs catch you.>
Notes
An nether portal is generated where the player spawns, but is invisible until the area is reloaded/right-clicked on.
Practically impossible to reproduce on a newly created Flat world, but reproducible reliably (using the above steps) on a newly created Infinite world.
Appears to also occur during an autosave/automatic backup of the world.
Sometimes, the player starts to "see" the destination dimension (all the existing chunks disappear, fog colour changes, coordinates update correctly) when entering a portal before the loading screen/building terrain screen occurs (whether this issue occurs independently, or a client-side visual issue, is another thing), but after the player loads in, the coordinates are incorrect.
This information is also applicable for MCPE-120431.
Workarounds
Some possible workarounds (may not always work) include:
Throwing an item into the portal before entering it (per noob1884); this does not seem to prevent occurence using the elytra method
Turn on Show Autosave Icon and only enter portals in the period immediately after an autosave. For Realms, you can check when an automatic backup is done which is usually every 30 minutes when the Realm is "active"
Creating "safe areas" where you are expected to spawn incorrectly
Using the elytra method to return to the portal in the previous dimension (a portal is generated where you spawn but is initially invisible, right click around to find it)

I'm having the same issue. Go from the Overword through a nether portal that has an exact pair in the Nether. But instead of arriving there, end up in the Nether with the same coordinates as the portal in the Overworld. Sometimes there's is no return portal shown. If there is, it will transport to the "correct" portal in the Overworlds based on the 8:1 ratio, but it's not at all where I started.
Last time it took me 4 hours to walk back to my original overworld location.
I'm playing Bedrock Edition on Windows 10. The world that I'm experiencing this on is running 1.16.220 (Build 5667935, Branch r/16_u4) , is local, with an "Infinite" World Type.

Temporary workaround, although it’s kind of a pain, is to save your world & make sure it’s backed up prior to each attempt @ using a portal. I’ve found that sometimes my portals work & sometimes they don’t, so if it doesn’t work, I can just d/l my world & try it again. If it does work I can just save/backup again before using the next portal. Not perfect &, again, kind of a pain, but better than not being able to use your portals @ all!

One more Easy way to Reproduce this bug:
Steps To Reproduce:
Place a bed near the portal and wait for night time.
Go in the portal and just before You are going to get to the Nether, click on the bed.
You will sleep on bed and around after 1 second, Generating World will come and you will get to the same Nether coordinate as in Overworld.

I've started seeing this on the PS4 after downloading the latest patch today (with no previous problems). It doesn't happen every time, but at least 2/3 of the trips through a portal leaves me at the same coordinates on the other side, thousands of blocks from my nearest portal back.
I did nothing special before jumping through the portal, though I may have accessed a chest, and I didn't use an Elytra.

Happened again today. PS4 Bedrock v1.16.221. No elytra equipped, not really found any working workarounds, definitely happening less without elytra equipped but still enough of an issue to make avoiding the nether seem the better option.

Yea It definitely happens more when the server / device is under the load. I mean ever since the 1.16.221 came out we definitely see it less often but only because 221 has a lot of performance improvement vs previous patch so our server is working much smoother in general.
But when the server is slow due to CPU, RAM or IO overload then it happens a lot. Peeps are getting stranded in random locations, often die loosing all their stuff.

This also happens on the UWP (Windows 10) Bedrock Beta 1.17.0.58. I have restarted my world a couple of times on UWP and even played and had the same issue on the Switch (non-beta) version. Sometimes I resort to only making a portal at 0,0 to try to avoid the issue, but then I can only have one nether portal. I have wasted many hours trekking back in the overworld from far flung areas of the map (1000's of blocks, no elytra) trying to get back to the area I was playing in.

To fix it, just like me, synchronize the portals even if you’re not where you want to be
This way it never happened to me again ... but even so this bug has to be corrected.

I'm having the same issue (going to and from the Nether). I play on a Switch and it's been happening fairly consistently since the last 1.16 update. Given what I have read here, there is probably a memory conflict when the game is trying to save and generate terrain at the same time. But, I have no idea how the mapping formula could dynamically change during a save.

I am on Windows 10 version beta 1.17.10.20 and having the exact same issue. This issue occurs no matter what I was doing while entering the portal. I am sent to the same XYZ coordinates when entering the Nether. After locating the original paired portal, (or calculated Nether coordinates and building a new portal) I can go through to pair it to the correct Overworld portal sometimes. It took 4 or 5 attempts before the correct portals started linking, but it continues to be a huge issue for me, since I have an extensive Nether railway to move between my different bases in the Overworld.

@unknown please keep comments on tickets relevant to the issue reported on that ticket (don't ask others to look at your reports on other bug reports). Thanks!

I went through a OW portal at 318,71,227 xyz and came into the Nether at 43,81,31 xyz. This was awesome because I was close to a dwelling in the Nether.
When I returned to the OW I came out at a portal at 2554,63,1913 xyz. Over 2000 blocks from my origin.
Calculations so that this is in the area of 8* the original OW portal.
When I go back through the portal at 2554,63,1913 xyz it brings me to 319,34,238 xyz in the Nether. Correct calculations. And I now have a linked portal but a long way from where I should have been.

This happened many times in my world until I destroyed unmounted all level 4 locator maps that were not aligned to the map grid. (I thought I destroyed them, but there was one that did apparently not despawn yet.) As soon as I did that, all my portals worked flawlessly according to the 8:1 Overworld to Nether ratio. I hope this helps you troubleshoot the issue.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the beta. Imported the same world and entered a portal with a locator map equipped in the off-hand and (I reloaded and the map doesn't seem to matter) the issue came back going to the nether. Coming back sometimes works, but sometimes doesn't.
This happened more than 20 times before it was fixed, I have large graveyards of portals that I broke to try to unlink them. I guess I won't have to worry about getting obsidian for spare ender chests.
I'm on Windows 10 Bedrock Edition, Beta 1.17.10.21

v1.16.221 Windows 10
I've ran into this twice now and only going to the Nether out of MANY trips - I was able to Elytra+Rockets back to the expected Nether location but was very weird and I initially thought I did something wrong.

I've had this happen on my world, both from going in the Nether and from going into the End! When it happened with the End portal, I actually fell into the void and lost everything on me at the time...

Version - Playstation 4.
There was some comments earlier about throwing objects through the portal first, a few seconds before you travel through. This seems to be working for me on the PS4. I am still making backups/copies before I travel through and one sequence of pass throughs I ended up over 50000 away from base....Easire to just trash the copy and go back to an older one.
Process
Save and exit
Copy current world
Load current world
Through apple through portal
Wait 3 seconds
Go through portal
Success - continue playing
Failure -
Drop out of world,
Delete current world,
Rename pre-portal world copy to current world name
Copy pre-portal (now current) world
Load current pre-portal world
Try again
A lot of faff, particularly on a PS4. but still better than either suffocating to death, void or 50000 blocks away.

Not only are portals to and from the nether now taking me to only unconverted coordinates, but when I took a new overworld portal to the nether, it dropped me off at my unconverted coordinates with no nether portal at all. Spending an hour tunneling back netted me 23 ancient debris, but not really what I wanted to do.
UPDATE: I exported my world, uninstalled and reinstalled the beta (Win 10 MCPE 1.17.10.22), travelled back to my base (I had swam over a 1000 blocks away exploring before exporting.) and all portals are working perfectly again. I'm not sure if it has something to do with the beta overwriting the normal installation weird or something, but reinstalling it worked for me.

I can confirm for official 1.17.0 if it hasn't been already. We experienced this after creating a nether portal in the Nether, which then created a brand new portal in the Overworld. I came out just find, exactly where I wanted to but when my friend went in the newly created Overworld portal, it took her to Overworld coords so very far away from the original portal in the Nether. Fortunately we have a previous save and I don't mind redoing what I did to save her butt ❤️. I do recall throwing an item into the portal before we went through, coincidentally. I felt like it made this happen. That doesn't seem to be the case. Though strangely, a random pet showed up at the portal as I went in and came out exactly where I should have. So it didn't effect me. I noticed quite a lot of block lag but that can't be it. We do have locator maps posted on frames. Only two. Neither of us had our maps on us though. This isn't the first time this happened. But it is the first time in this world. Or rather second since the random pet at the portal seemed to have appeared from somewhere once lost.

This same bug (MCPE-115933) happened to me. I went into a existing portal at -600, (approx 60), 4208 in the overworld and ended up in the nether at the same coordinates. Also, there was also no portal created on the nether side.
Bedrock version 1.17.0 on PC

Can confirm we've seen this on our PS4 world. On one world just kept being teleported way away from the original portal on the Nether side. I didnt think to check if the co-ordinates were same as the Overworld but I'm guessing thats whats happening.
And on a newer world recently I ended up in the Nether but no portal was generated on the other side. I'm guessing, again, the portal was generated in the correct place but I'd been placed at the same co-ords as the Overworld so miles away from where I should have been.
Either way it seems fairly easy to recreate on PS4.

This very thing happened first time yesterday on my PS4 on the new 1.17 update, never happened before. Even on 1.17 I used several times on the same day without incident ... Until I died on the nether and tried to go back to try to retrieve my equipment, and got misplaced, new place no portal. Went tried to go back to the OW, I went into the middle of a infinite ocean 8000 blocks away from my base. Frustrated is not enough to describe the situation, two full equipments wasted in 10 minutes (one was my fault, the second I had to commit suicide to respawn back at my base to avoid a long trip back swimming)

Reminder: Comments are for providing additional information about the bug that might help the developers find and fix the bug. We also encourage you to share workarounds. Comments for any other purpose are off-topic and subject to removal. If you want to rant about how long it's taking, go elsewhere.
Also, statement that this bug has existed for years are false information. It's understandable that you would think that's true because these symptoms have occurred at several times over the years. However, a bug is technically a specific flaw in specific code, it's not a set of symptoms. All these reoccurrences of similar symptoms have come from different flaws in different bits of code, so technically they're different bugs with similar symptoms. It's not fair to the developers to accuse them of neglectng a bug for years, when the reality is that they've fixed it every time, with the exception of the latest one.

There is a similar bug in the end, which is even more annoying as it is over void sometimes

The same thing happened to me in my PlayStation, I just want to tell you that this does not happen every time. when this happened to me it took me to my ow cords in the nether and generate a portal there, then I logged in with my other account and went to the same portal but it did not do the same bug, it took me to the right place, I was going to get my other account firework rockets because I had one stack only and I was 44 k blocks away from my base. I hope this helps finding and fixing the bug. thank you.

I think it has something to do with the world size, because it doesn’t happen on my worlds that are smaller than a 1 gig but it does happen on my bigger world

I had a similar issue but a bit different I think. It has never happened until after the latest update. Used my usual portal at my base that I have been in and out of many many times, however I was spawned on the otherside of the underworld with no portal, and coordinates did not match my above world portal either. I didn't eat as I went through. When I eventually died and went back through, everything was as normal. I have since used it about three or four times and so far no problems. Was a random section of underworld I hadn't explored and even after almost an hour of travelling back towards my original portal coords, i was still thousands of blocks away. This was on playstation. Hope this info helps. Also my world is 360MB total.

This bug is fixed in the latest beta version, and the fix will be included in a future update when that is ready for full release (no specific date can be given). We will leave this ticket open as a point of reference until the fix has been fully released.

A helping TIP. If it happens again.
Have lodestone next to your base nether portal. Have enchanted compas with you at all times. that what saved me in nether.

Do we know if Update 1.17.2 fixed this issue? Mods seem to think that the next update would solve this but I didn't see anything in the update notes about whether or not this problem was addressed. Thanks.

1.17.2 Hotfix only fixed MCPE-127555 and MCPE-130185. This bug will be fixed in 1.17.10.

I think this will take a while to see if it got fixed, since in some cases it happens and there is no way to reliably reproduce it. That's cool that they might have a fix for it!

Beta 1.17.10.23 changelog only mentions Nether portals, does the fix apply to End portals as well?

I really don't understand this claim its sporadic or difficult to reproduce. Up until the recent update I'd never seen it before. Now on a 6 month old world, a several years old world and a new world I've seen it on PS4. Everytime I go through a portal. I took screenshot tonight just to confirm its same coordinate problem. Thankfully copied my world before trying and deleted it after. Its very easy to recreate.
Will just avoid the nether / end and try this out with backups first after each update.

I can reproduce this by throwing an Ender Pearl to the middle right of a nether portal frame properly while in the nether. Inversely, Throughing pearls in this way at an overworld portal divides your coords by 8 teleports you there in the overworld. Video to come.

It has now happened the other way. My game crashed as I was about to enter the portal in the nether. When i reloaded I was at the portal. Went through and it spat me out at the same overworld coordinates as the nether portal with no portal. I closed app, reloaded and was at the same overworld coords but now with an active portal half buried in the ground. Went through and was at a different nether biome. Ended up dying and loosing all my stuff again trying to shortcut my way home through the nether as the above world coordinates were forever away from my base. I'm so annoyed. It's only happened twice, but both times have been at crucial moments for me. Can't wait for this to be fixed.

This happend to me, but also with portal ghosting.

This can happen in the end too. Got teleported to the outer islands when entering the portal.

Something simmilar has happend to me, but I spawned far away from my normal portal and did not spawn next to a portal so couldn't go back to the overworld and i had to find the closest portal to the overworld.

A glitch happend also in the end portal for me. One time I did not see anything and just started taking damage so I asumed I spawned in the void. I have aøso spawned a vouple thousands of blocksaway from the main end island. I think both time happend i had glided with the elytra trought the end portal. It has happend both before and after 1.17

Can we confirm if this is a multiplayer world issue versus singleplayer/both?
My issue and few others only happened to us while we were in a friend's world. For me, it only happens to the host. I'm not sure if this info will help the devs at all, but I'd thought to ask.

Mine is single player

Happened to me in both the nether and the end. Not fun when it spawns you over a lava lake or just void in the end and you lose all your stuff. It seems to trigger the bug when entering the end portal while gliding with the elytra or simply interacting with the player in any way.

Happens to all players on my world on xbox 1. Going from the OW to the nether will sometimes put you at the OW coordinates in the nether and sometimes leaving the nether will put you at the nether coordinates in the OW. Most times it will not make a portal when it puts us in the wrong coordinates and the one time it did for me I went back through it and it put me in a wall and I died.

Just curious.. does this only happen when wearing Elytra? Every time it's happened to me I've been wearing them but not flying, just walking through. I haven't experienced the End problem but honestly haven't been back in a while.
Also, once when I teleported from the Nether into the OW there was no portal but I walked back through the same area where the portal should have been (within a few seconds) and was teleported back. (Invisible portal?) That has only happened once.

Happens even without Elytra; started a new world, jumped into the nether for the first time; same overworld coordinates.
Single player mode, did not appear to be autosaving either.

Thanks Kieran.

Had the same thing happen to me. Went through my main nether portal from base. Teleported 2000 blocks away from normal outlet portal in nether. Ended up digging under the nether and mined my way 2k blocks back. I've had several issues with nether portals since 1.16 arrived. How is this not patched yet?

This appears to be fixed in 2.26 patch for PS4. Only tested on 1 portal so far (with a back up first) but went to right place.
As a side note caves and cliffs experimental feature looks awesome!

Experienced this in 1.17.11.01 Bedrock Dedicated Server.

For regressions of this issue after the 1.17.10 update please make a new report with steps to reproduce.

I use machine translation because I am not good at English.
I'm having a similar issue (ver 1.19.30).
The World is the Realms.
Nether Portal - Game freezes on Load Screen and then takes player to same X,Z coordinates in Nether as were in Overworld after restarting.
I have entered the portal several times since then and cannot reproduce the problem.
