Series of events leading up to the suspected bug:
Spawned in friend's world, with the chunk that the nether portal was in rendered, went towards the portal, ate baked potatoes as I went through the portal, finished eating before it went onto the dirt block loading screen, then I spawned in the middle of nowhere in the nether. My friend said that he had seen the "TheCakeDevourer joined the game" message as I said I was in the middle of nowhere.
What happened after the bug had occurred:
When I was in the nether, at first there was no portal to get back. But then I got disconnected (I left the game). When I joined back in the world as if by magic, a portal had appeared. I went through the portal, but I managed to end up 6000+ blocks away from (overworld) spawn and in a cave. I went back to the cave portal to go back to the nether and it bought me out where I had started (the middle of nowhere). Now I am armed with only wooden picks to get back, since my better one broke 🙂.
**Please note that this only happened today, and I'll probably add to this later!

Awesome bug report man! Very well made honestly! I just made a little video on this, showing it happening and how to reproduce it. As well as how to abuse this to travel 1000's or 10,000's of blocks. While its here might as well use it to find a mansion or something right🙂

For me the world coordinates (X,Z) stayed the same from the overworld to the nether and did not divide by 8 as it normally should.

I just had it happen to me, but just once on Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, while trying to find my way anywhere, I died and lost all my recently upgraded stuff. Ug. The next time I went through the portal, it worked.

This bug is fixed in the latest beta version, and the fix will be included in a future update when that is ready for full release (no specific date can be given). We will leave this ticket open as a point of reference until the fix has been fully released.

This bug is WAY worse in 1.13, now this happens randomly, and often. Basically no portal is safe 😬

I never had an issue with it until I updated to 1.13 today - I spawned in the nether without a portal and the same coordinates as the overworld

I have this problem too. Going into the nether and it sent me to the coordinats i left the overworld from. It was the first portal use after the update to 1.13. Has not happened since. I am at random times dieing coming back from nether. I can hear myself suffocating wile on the loading screen. My realm mate tells me it said i died in a wall but nothing generates for me. ive seen this bug on another report as well.

https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE-54519 is the 1.13 portal bug ticket. The 1.13 isn't random it spits you out at the same cords as the dimension you left. You enter a overworld portal at 1000 by 1000 you end up in the nether at 1000 by 1000.
