Going through nether portal from overworld led to spawn in same coordinates in nether, no portal spawns

I went through a nether portal from the overworld that already had a linked portal in the nether. I finished eating a cooked chicken at the same time I was teleported and instead of nether coordinates being divided by 8 like normal, I went to the mirror coordinates in the nether. Also, no portal spawned at the location I was teleported.
