Entering a portal at high tick speeds sometimes causes game to freeze

Steps to reproduce:
Easiest to reproduce in creative mode
Set tick speed as high as device can normally handle
Enter a nether portal a few times

Expected results:
Player is teleported promptly to appropriate dimension within 3 seconds

Actual results:
Occasionally, the game will get stuck at "Building terrain" for a noticeably longer time, even on newest-generation hardware
