What steps did you take prior to loading the world? Was there any lag or unusual activity with the game itself prior to or during the loading process? Did you last load and save the world in a third party editor? Did you have a power outage? Did you activate experiments? It's hard to say what happened unless you provide more information.
Also when you loaded the world when this happened, did you hear a bunch of grass or stone breaking sounds upon loading seeing the chunks disappear followed the next second later by any paintings and item frames popping off of where they were supposed to be?
