Note
This report covers any of the following occuring without a game crash:
Chunks (portions of the world) being wholly or partially (i.e. below a certain Y-level) deleted and turned to void/air
Chunks being reset to a state of initial generation (This may result in the chunk not matching surrounding chunks that were generated in an earlier version.)
Chunks reverting to an earlier saved state (usually the state the chunk was in before the last time that area of the world was visited)
Rollbacks related to crashes on realms are tracked at MCPE-12347.
This bug is reported in single-player worlds, more commonly in multiplayer, and most commonly on realms (similar to data loss involving entities, MCPE-21416) or with syncing worlds through cloud saves (MCPE-26064).

The chunks didn't load and when i was on the "worlds" and the world's picture was a purple and black checkered, I didn't think much about it but that's when I joined the world and I saw chunks broken up all over, like an earthquake just happened . Luckily I was working on it for a couple of days, so I didn't lose so much progress. It is just that I do not want this to happen again in my world.

Regression of MCPE-58514.
Sorry to hear this happened to you, but we don't have enough information to understand and reproduce your issue. When did this happen? Does MCPE-58514 sound like your bug?

Yes

From the pictures here and in some of the duplicate reports, it looks like the data loss doesn’t always affect the entire chunk. In some cases surface (topmost) chunk sections are spared. I think this suggests the issue is related to loading optimization.
Could you please provide us with as much information as possible (within reason) to help us reproduce this issue?
Did this happen on a Realm, or a local world?
Which device did this happen on?
Did this happen before or after doing anything in particular?
If you have a copy of the world available, you might like to upload a copy of it for investigation.
On Windows 10 you can use the Export world feature.
On Android or iOS you need to use a file explorer to navigate to Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds
On Xbox or Switch the only way is to upload it to a Realm, and then download the world on Windows 10 or Android/iOS. (Please do not purchase a Realms subscription just to provide a world to us - but if you have a Realm already this may be a viable option if you wish to do so.)
If the world is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link.

• This happened in local world
• Device :- Samsung Note 8
• I am not sure what triggered the bug, but this is what i did before my world got glitched.....
Made a copy of the real local world
Turned on multiplayer option and enterd the world , i called in my friend to play inside the copy wrld and we both saw that some chunks were missing, then i rushed to see the real world was affected or not , sad to say it was as same as the copy world (missing chunks)....
I hope this might help u fix the bug..
It looks like you have tried to upload a copy of the world save - could you try again please? (Remember you can link to OneDrive or similar if the save is larger than the 10MB attachment limit here.)

This will work?
That's great, thanks.

Make backups often, because you never know when a bug will delete the world chunks or clear your inventory.

Mine is with holes too. What to do to it´s a 20h world and I want it.

Here is a world download link to one of my earlier affected worlds. I hope this helps in some way. This is by far one of the WORST bugs I've ever come across in a game. This is truly game breaking. Anyway I saved in one of the worst affected areas. We were building a base out near the mansion in a village and we came back to it and there were massive holes in the village!
A thing to note is that this happened after my computer had a power loss while we were playing and the auto-save icon was flashing. Any sort of game/computer crash or power loss seems to cause this issue. This makes me question the point of the "auto-save" feature if it doesn't seem to work. I've never seen game files just blow up and delete themselves this severely.

Here's my world - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TI8MQlGebvP12MCCRKqTsMKoi6V6bC-_/view?usp=sharing
I hope it'll help to solve the problem. Please do something about it. In my case the worst part was, that the holes appeared far away from where I was and I kept making progress without even knowing that my world is already broken.
It's a local world.
I play on a laptop, Winddows 10.
Here I've described it in details and with screenshots: MCPE-103210
I don't know if that's important but when my minecart disappeared, I pushed two full minecarts and they went towards the end of the railway, one probably hit the other and dissapeared. I looked everywhere around, it was gone. It was the moment the holes appeared, I see that on my back up worlds.

New here so may be out of my league on reporting, but want to help. I'm using the Xbox Game Pass version of Minecraft. I play on the Xbox Series X. I recently moved my xbox one x upstairs due to the new Series x.
This is when my saves started having issues and now the Big Holes or chunks started appearing. BTW others can see, fall in and die, then respawn, not just me.
I save the game downstairs, on the Series X. And go upstairs and try to load up the save from the cloud on the One x. Many times this doesn't work as easily as you would think and I get old save files and lose a ton of progress, very frustrating.
As of today I loaded Minecraft on the One X and waited for the sync from the Series X save from last night. It looked like no issues till I was strolling and found a big hole. My kids jumped on with their Android version of Minecraft and came to check out the Big Holes and even dared to fall into it. I walked around and now have several of these Chunks or Holes.
I can only think it has to do with the save of the game states? Maybe not saving all the way to the cloud? Or pulling all the way from the cloud?
Not sure, but wanted to give as much information as possible to help with the troubleshooting. Good luck.
Edit: Grammar error

Same happened to me deleted half my village, unfortunately the part that got deleted was the part wit all my good stuff, like all my nethrite armor, all my enchanting books and my dragon egg. Hope they can fix it

Copied my mcpe world from "/MC/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds" to new phone, and now it has these same chunk bug issues. Copied same world to PC bedrock and it works fine. Saved from PC and put back on phone... missing chunks again. So seems to be a bug tied to mcpe? This bug is a game breaker and extremely old... please fix mojang!

could this have something to do with MCPE-111197?

@Daniel MacDonald: not likely. If a player fell into a voided chunk they would die of void damage before fall damage. However, there is a confirmed bug causing random fall damage. I have resolved the ticket you mentioned as a duplicate.
@Chris: could you provide detail on the model and OS of your phone where the world gets chunk voided?

Out of fear, when this bug gets fixed, will my world get fixed or will it just not happen again?

This bug just happened to me too. I was playing normally ( I'm not a big gamer I kind of do the same stuff, like bulding and exploring), I quit the game and when I came back, many huge holes appeared and I lost part of my house and a lot of precious stuff .
If I fall into the hole, I die. I can put blocks to cover it but its too big I could never fix this (or get the stuff I lost)
Minecraft is the fisrt game i brought on my computer, I started a month ago and really enjoyed it! I'm really sad that I lost most of my progress and my world is destroy with theses holes.
Is there a way to get back my old progress ? I dont want to lose it all 😞
I'm playing on windows 10

@Michael Carmody, joelle: unfortunately, there is no way to make the chunks that have been voided come back. The data for those chunks is simply gone. The only thing you can do for future protection is make manual backups of your worlds regularly and restore one if new chunks get voided.

This issue has occurred on a world my daughter and I have been working on for years. It affects current and any of the dozens of copies of backups loaded. Windows 10 version local world that has also been accessed via iOS version.
The background may give some insight.
Issue was not discovered for a very long time due to the size and expanse of explored areas. We might spend weeks developing an area in a remote biome and connecting it up to a massive rail network (40+ minute journey times).
Issue affects areas that have been visited in the past but a long time previously. Nothing exists from top to bottom of map in affected areas.
I have maps mounted on walls that were created prior to the issue occurring. Making new maps and visiting the affected areas creates a perfect match up between historically visited locations and now missing chunks. These maps are available to compare.
All other areas load normally, newly visited locations load fine.
We now leave our characters running from location to location in rail carts, completely paranoid that if we don’t visit a location for a period, the chunks will be deleted.
What is the point of having a game that is supposed to be extensively explored and to develop areas if those areas might just disappear one day, not to be discovered until you try and visit and load that area at some point in the future?

This chunk error/corruption issue has also just happened on a Realm I'm part of. Its a mix of chunks that have regenerated completely different terrain to their surroundings and chunks that have completely voided. I have attached multiple screenshots of the issue.
We started to notice the chunk errors a couple of weeks ago at high distances from world spawn but it was on 14th February 2021 that these errors suddenly appeared close to world spawn and in areas that we have all built structures in. The chunk errors also extend to the End dimension.
We thought that the errors might only occur in rarely visited areas but with them appearing in our usual build spots, that theory doesn't seem to hold.

Has anyone figured out how to fix it without filling in the holes in creative? Like should we try and reload the chunks? if so, how? This just happened in my minecraft world this morning.

Chunks corrupted cant be reverted since the data of those chunks is gone, the best you can do is backups of future worlds

That is Crazy!!! Maybe try copying the world and going in Creative Mode and see what is going on and if the chunk bug has vanished then it's just for Survival then and the developers can identify this problem and fix it.

This also happened about 3 days ago in my realms, fortunately the members let me know as soon as they noticed it, it seems that this happened after the update of minecraft 1.16.220.

Please help! how do I fix this!? My survival house has been cut in half! I don't even know where to start! I can't even get to my End portal and the Mines cause the way down disappeared as well.

I am also experiencing this on a multiplayer world on Xbox One (not a realm). The game didn't crash, but periodically we notice some chunks have reverted to an earlier save. Not fully reset and made empty, but reverted to the way they used to be (such as an earlier build we had there).
Note this world has been synced back and forth between two Xboxes at different homes. It may be related.
Thanks for those that have added more information so far, and thank you for your patience. Could we please ask again if you would upload any recent copies of the world that you have for us to investigate?
On Windows 10 you can use the Export world feature
On Android or iOS you need to use a file explorer to navigate to Device storage > games > com.mojang > minecraftWorlds
On Xbox or Switch the only way is to upload it to a Realm, and then download the world on Windows 10 or Android/iOS. (Please do not purchase a Realms subscription just to provide a world to us - but if you have a Realm already this may be a viable option if you wish to do so.)
If the world is larger than 10MB you can upload the world to OneDrive or a similar file sharing site, and then share the link in a comment here.
It would also be helpful to know:
Which platform you are using (eg Win 10, Xbox etc)
Which version of the game you experienced this issue (was it a beta?)
Did you have Experimental Features enabled?
Was this a local world or multiplayer? (Realms, Dedicated server, or Xbox Live)

hi, i see this problem in my survival multiplayer world. according to the comments, i found the file “minecraftWorlds” but i don’t know what to do after. there are bunch of more files in it. can I fix this by myself?

Duru Kangul: each folder inside the "minecraftWorlds" folder. You can identify the worlds by going in to those folders and checking the thumbnail or levelname file (it should be in text format). Once you have identified the world folder, put it into a .zip file and attach it here or on a file sharing site.

I think a large portion of my problem was that I used MCC ToolChest to delete explored but undeveloped fringes of my world prior to the update. While most of the chunks loaded fine, in one specific region a large portion didn't regenerate. I finally found a solution - I created a new temporary survival world (my original world is survival) with the same seed and other options (fire spread, show coordinates, etc). After creating it I changed it to a creative world and teleported to the region that was missing chunks in the original world. I used screenshots of a map from the original world that showed the missing areas (they appear black on the map) to reveal the chunks of the new world. Once I revealed all of those chunks, I exited the temporary world and changed it back to survival (I think this may be an important step, but maybe not). I closed Minecraft, opened the original world in MCC ToolChest, and used the merge feature to combine the temporary world with the original world. After saving the merged file, I reopened the original world and the chunks were there. This did not negatively impact my ability to earn achievements and also allowed new ore generation (I noticed copper in the recovered chunks). This worked well for me mostly because the missing chunks had not been developed in any way - any progress in developed chunks would have been lost.
On a side note - something I noticed: I had removed a LOT of chunks (entire regions) the day before the update. Most of them were fine after the update. The ones that had a problem were more recently explored - any that hadn't been entered in a long time were not affected. Elapsed time since the last visit seemed to play a MAJOR role in whether the chunk had problems regenerating.

Something similar happened to me but instead of being void it resets all of my chunks all my builds and stuff are gone here is the world link
is.gd/QYKc6w
The zip includes the backup and the world in which it happend
Here are the steps to reproduce maybe I don't have access to older versions
It includes nether portals
Steps to reproduce
1. create a world in older version than 1.17
2.Enter a nether portal
3.open the world in 1.17
4.Go back to the overworld
And all the chunks are resetted

Dave Fritz: It is certainly possible that you deleted (voided) some chunks when you meant to reset them. That is not a bug in Minecraft, and any world edited in that way is not relevant to the bug reported here.

This has happened to me twice. I first noticed it on a world that I had been working on for a while and reluctantly started a new one. Within a span of a few days, it happened on the new world also. The second world I literally only had a few farms on it where it happened. Nothing out of the ordinary happened and I didn't use any third party programs to cause said issue either. For me, this all started with the 1.17 updates to the game. A copy of my second world is located here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0ncpl4959cjm3us/A%20whole%20new%20world.mcworld?dl=0
I am playing on a PC with windows 10 and minecraft version 1.17.2.

This is happening to my Realm daily

happens to me, just restart ur game and ur good to go!

Restarting does not work. If it did for you, good for you, but it doesnt work for everyone.

My world on my realm gets corrupted chunks almost every time someone is playing on the realm between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.
I also haven't seen the message pop up about the server restart come up. It's a completely vanilla world on my realm.

Is there any updates on when this will be fixed? We can't play on anyone's Realms anymore because this is happening to all of us and even with using a new world on the realm it still gets corrupted. Why isn't Realms shut down if it's just breaking peoples worlds at the moment?

It was suggested by a couple of people in our Realm that this was occurring because of someone using the "Toolbox for MCPE" Plug in App which was using an outdated version

My Realm is still doing this so we closed it until this is resolved.

This has recently started happening in my realm. Whatever is causing it seems to be occurring in the middle of the night. It happened on Sept 16th and again today on the 21st.

I've noticed this case hasn't progressed much since I opened this issue 2 years ago. Mojang never responded directly to my suggested resolution (or vital evidence), and it's now buried deep in this thread and/or links to mis-closed or mis-merged cases. So, in hopes of directing Mojang to the actual problem... here it is again:
1. The problem occurs when,
-A Mincraft update adds a new mob.
-The new mob spawns in location that the user has previously edited. For example, I built a structure where now (after an update) a piliger tower spawned (a newly added mob at the time). That location then developed a huge missing chunk/s.
2. This issue only happens on my "heavily" edited stock worlds (vanilla with no mods). Since this means the issue only may occur on user's deeply time-invested projects, I believe it should now be Mojang's best critical interest to fix this issue.
3. As an interim solution, I'm again requesting a tutorial on how to stitch in a chunk. If we have this procedure, we all could take the chunk coordinates from a good backup world, and then replace those coordinates in the world after it has been updated, thus overwriting the corruption in the location that the update caused.

@Chilidad Stitching chunks is was possible using chunker.app & MCC Tool Chest or Amulet. Unfortunately, 1.17.30 has changed how chunks are saved again, meaning using these programs can actually exacerbate the void chunk issue. Though it is possible to save structures using behavior packs, this is probably too complicated for the average player, & is limited to a 64x256x64 volume which may not suffice for experimental worlds.
It would be extremely helpful if Mojang shared chunk saving details with the community before updates in order to make better 3rd party software or add features in vanilla that are more reliable.

This happened, too, but my case is the biggest.

I and my friend spent 3 years to make this world and still making. I can't tell about it to my friend because this is so sad. I hope that I can build in my world again. (I had a Realm but I don't have it now) In my case, some buildings are remained. But these were fell down.
Or will my world come back if I buy Realm?

1 Nintendo Switch
2 1.17.30
3 yes
4 a local world
I don't know how to download a world on Windows 10.

@IKAJAPAN YTO, The world will be same, even when you create realm with this world...

So... You mean.... I should give up.....?
I've spent for 3 years. I'm so sad and I can't be smile.. Mojang.... Please help me(us) on next update..

Try to find backup file

I play Minecraft on Nintendo Switch. Where is a backup file? (local world)

Ummmm... Sorry, I don't have Nintendo... Try to ask your friends, if Nintendo haves access to files like a pc

One thing I'll say about this that I haven't seen mentioned is that when it happens in my realm we know because it seems to turn coordinates off. Anyone else notice something similar?

...

Seeing the same issues in our realm. It’s getting to the point no one wants to do a lot of work for fear of losing it.

This happened to me with my Minecraft Championship-Like World. My whole hub was gone and my world was covered in missing chunks., It was on experimental gameplay so I saw the warning about a buggy world and copied the world. I copied it again to see if it was a one time thing but the same things happened and it the exact same coordinates. I’m really annoyed. MOJANG PLEASE FIX THIS!

@Keith Hicks - The same thing happened to a Realm I was part of. It wasn’t just the co-ordinates that turned off, all the world options would reset to default - such as fire spread turning back on that caused some buildings to burn down before we realised…
It’s worth noting that the world options would reset after the Realm crashed, at which point we would notice that the chunk errors also spread to more places.

i had the same thing but luckly for me i had an bit older copy of the world
but it was ON singleplayer

sorry this has happen to your world, but my bug tracker got marked as duplicate but the devs really haven't even taken a look at my world yet, but I have one big huge void hole on my realm that probably goes on in hundreds of chunks, I mean it's pretty scary, here's my copy of my realm world, go to -622 -35 1800 no loaded chunks,
https://www.dropbox.com/s/isvuqytcte5t7d4/Realm%20world%20Copy.mcworld?dl=0

Possibly related to MCPE-85039, MCPE-87376, and MCPE-87503 which are related to chunks that haven't been loaded in a long time.
For those affected:
Has this world ever been modified using a third party tool?
Has the world been used on a Realm?
Does this happen to multiple worlds, or just certain ones? (eg only old worlds, or newly created ones too?)
Have you ever used ticking areas in the world, as described in MCPE-58514?

1) A third party tool was used in my first world. No third party tool was used in my second world. Chunks went missing/reverting in both.
2) Worlds were never used in a Realm.
3) As stated, my first world that I created some time ago lost chunks. I then recently created a new one, and then that one had chunks revert back to their original state.
4) No clue what a ticking area is. If it is referring to chunks with farms using redstone, it has happened to chunks using redstone and chunks without it.

1. No tools used on any.
2. World has not been on a realm.
3. This has happened on 15+ worlds for me - all (as far as I remember) last loaded 2017 or earlier.
4. No. Don't believe ticking areas were around that early.

1. Never.
2. No. Just a local world.
3. Just certain one (Only old worlds.)
4. Never
(I don't find the problem in 1.16.40 (Maybe is the version), just find after I update to 1.17.40.)
Thanks for the additional information. If at all possible, could you share a copy of the world save from before the issue began, so we can compare it to the copy with the missing chunks?

Single player world, no tool enable. Has not being on realms
Even if i destroy the blocks generated others come back in chunk borders, leaves vine water source tree logs.
My world have just add-ons enable just so i cen have debug screen. I swear that at this point im so frustrated with bedrock, so many bugs that make it impossible to play. By the way i play on android. To be honest my problem do no look related to this in anyway because i did not lose hole chunks to the void, is just blocks being generated when the chunk get loaded
The world was created at 1.17.0.50 and the bug started at 1.17.40. when 1,19 update i will wait for the full release so i do not loose that much of progress again. I stoped to play in this world hoping that one day i can comeback
This bug is fixed in the latest beta version, and the fix will be included in a future update when that is ready for full release (no specific date can be given). We will leave this ticket open as a point of reference until the fix has been fully released.

I added a screenshot of mine, since the images I'm seeing (new to the bug tracker) all show voids. this one just reset the chunk back to how it originally generated.
[media]
I'm in the 1.18 prerelease, this event happened on 11/14/21
this happened while my character/game was loaded in - I'd gone afk, and left my toon inside a building, came back a few minutes later (don't remember exactly how long, probably in the 15 to 30 min range) to find a chunk of my building gone, and the actual chunk reset back to how I'd found it hours before. I had not logged out or anything from the time I'd started clearing the area until the error happened - was playing all day.
single player world, pure survival, no cheats.
I'll save this exact version of the world (only closed the building in) along with the backup the system made earlier that day.
this should be unmoded - I'm not good at adding mods, the only one I have is optifine, and this was being played through the little drop down in the java launcher that lets you select version.
I'm OK at troubleshooting most programs and windows (I used to be better, but I'm rusty and several years out of date), but I don't really know how or where to look for much information in Minecraft... let me know where to send/put the world files or where to get any additional information that might help.
Reply from @unknown: This is a Bedrock Edition bug report. You are playing Java Edition—Optifine is a Java-Edition mod. Please search in the Java project for a report that describes your issue.

Does the bug fix prevents from similar issues from re-occurring, or will it also recover the voids and reinstate the missing objects?

this bug is back, it just reset a large area of a server i play on. may be a world size issue.

I would like to play minecraft again, but my world still has missing chunk, is there any solution to this?
