1 put piston some where
2 put observer block to piston (touch piston's body)
3 power to piston
4 observer is not working
Observer block is not in response to a piston that is next! A decent sensor is surface has been towards the piston! It 's not how inconvenient.

If you want the piston to make the observer send a Redstone signal. Try flipping the observer where the arrow is pointing towards the Redstone lamp. If that doesn't work place the piston back 2 with a block attached to the piston extender then activate it where the block will be pushed into the slot where the piston is in the video.
This bug report works as intended The observer block detects an update, such as a block being broken or placed next to it in conjunction to powering the item you had placed on it's opposite side. The pistons head moving doesn't count in this situation, unless the entire piston next to it was destroyed the observer won't detect the update.
