Hello Mojang, when upgrading my world to Minecraft version 1.18, some chunks which were loaded but have never been ventured into since 1.17 have reset and is now replaced by an ocean. Luckily, though, I did backup my world.
Reproduce (requires a Windows PC or iPadOS/iOS device)
Create a world in the Minecraft version 1.17.41 or earlier, but not before 1.17.0.
Load all chunks within your render distance, preferably wait a couple of seconds and maybe even a minute so that your chunks load properly in all directions.
Exit the world and load it into version 1.18.0.
Notice that some chunks which are a little bit further away from you, have not been touched yet still visible, are replaced by 1.18.0 terrain generation.
Expected Results
Loaded chunks should not reset when upgrading to 1.18.0.

--I have a similar issue in my 4 year old survival world. A river and lake that I used to travel between my bases were replaced with new world generation. The river now turns in a different direction and no longer gets close to the lake at all. The lake is now a pool around where I built a base in the southeast corner, and a small lake at the northwest where I built my third base, but everything in between is now a mountain.--
--Naturally, since I was only traveling by boat across the water, I didn't mine it or build on it (except for the bases, which aren't affected by the bug). I suspect that since those chunks were never modified from the original world generation, after 1.18 they become unmodified from the new world generation. That feels like a bug to me, because I can no longer use my old transportation corridors and big pieces of my world are radically changed from how I remember them. The bug might also depend on the world having been created before release 1.16, which introduced a significant change to how chunks are stored.--
Update: I realized sometime later that the damage described above only occurred in chunks I had pruned in 1.17 using a third-party tool. This was therefore not valid as evidence of a bug and must be disregarded.

Thanks for your reply. Something similar did happen to my second survival world created when 1.17 dropped back in June. I had a wonderful view of a mountain range (not 1.18 mountains) from my starter house, and a dark oak forest behind my house for an infinite supply of wood. When I upgraded to 1.18, my wonderful mountain was gone, so as the dark oak forest, and was replaced with water, making my once giant land into an island sort of form. I took a look around, and one of those large oaks was cut in half. The forest which continued after that was completely replaced with a shoreline and then a mini-ocean, after that I could see some dark oak hills (1.18 generation). There was also a 1.18 mountain visible in the distance surrounded by forest.
