Playing in my personal realm and i smelted a ton of stuff in my furnace that has hoppers removing the items to store XP. Flipped a lever to allow me to pull out items manually for XP but removing one item brought me from 6 levels to 14 (which is a lot for 1 pull), but then it went back to normal. I had no mending items in my inventory. I smelted nearly a full chest of stone, food, and various ores, so I should have gotten a ton more than that. As it is working now this is useless for enchanting or mending.

I never experienced it storing XP indefinitely. It did used to give a portion of the stored XP with each pull until it was empty, and it stored more total XP. (this made it ideal for a base with many people living in it to share) The amount that this stores is worthless. It's faster to fish to get XP than it is to smelt items. This was the only way I could have an "XP farm" as a casual player. But of course they seem to suck the fun out of the game to ensure that only Java players have any kind of enjoyment out of it.
In order to determine whether this is a bug or working as expected, we need to know the following information:
Exactly how many items and what kind were smelted since the last time an item was removed from the furnace.
What experience level you started at and what level you ended up at when pulling item(s) out of the furnace.
Whether you were wearing / holding any damaged tools / armor / etc that have the Mending enchantment.

I did not track the exact amounts before, so I ran it again. I smelted 9.5 stacks of copper and went from exactly 25 levels to halfway through level 26. I was not holding any mending items.
9.5 stacks = 608 ingots
608 x 0.7 XP each = 425.6 XP total
That should be enough to go from level 25 to halfway through level 29

Seems to work correctly - when you pull out an item, XP that was stored in the furnace up to this point is released to the player and furnace XP resets back to 0. If you expect furnace to store XP indefinitely (not reset to 0 on item removal) then this exploit no longer works - it was an obvious bug that was corrected.
