Pressure plates (all) act as full blocks while playing the game.

What do you mean by full blocks? If you mean they occupy a space of one block then that's an intended behavior because every block in Minecraft behaves that way.
You get the suffocating texture when you walk into a block, much like the button bug. (Please relate to it btw)
To recreate:
1. Make a PC village table (a fence and a pressure plate on top)
2. Go to the pressure plate. You will be surrounded with a wood or stone texture.
