Undead mobs not attracted to turtle eggs above foot level

If you place a turtle egg on the ground in a flat area and then spawn an undead mob, the go stomp it. But if you move the egg up one block, so that it’s at head hight, the mobs don’t care.

how to recreate

  1. place an egg on the ground.

  2. spawn an undead mob.

  3. move the egg up a block and compare mob reactions.

The reason the mob does not move to the egg and jump on it is that it cannot find a path to the egg. It cannot find a path because there is no empty space next to the egg with a top surface underneath to support the mob. If you simply place another block next to the block that you have the egg on then the mob will jump onto it and proceed to jump on the egg.

For that reason, I think this report is misnamed. Mobs are attracted to turtle eggs above foot level. Indeed, placing an egg in the position described in this report has a noticeable effect on undead mobs: it greatly reduces how much they wander around. For that reason, this report could be resolved as Cannot Reproduce. I have a feeling, though, that you expect the mob to have a different reaction. This is why it's important to include Expected Results in the description. I can think of at least three different behaviors that might be described by "attracted to turtle eggs":

  • The mob shows some difference in behavior. (They already do this--they mostly stop moving.)

  • The mob moves as close to the egg as it can get, which would be next to the block the egg is on. (Matches how zombies react to villagers they cannot reach.)

  • The mob jumps onto the edge of the block the egg is on to get to the egg. (Possibly beyond the capability of the pathfinding AI, and certainly beyond its present logic.)
