When one logs into an area, it leaves a black mark on the map. The black areas look different to each player. Two players logged and relogged in the same area and found that they now saw the same black markings (which had changed from how the map had looked like before logging). Updating the maps changes the black markings. The maps in the attached image are locked, but this bug effects non-locked maps as well.
