When my son start up minecraft, he always get a black screen.

Make sure there are no third party texture packs installed and uninstall any mods. Also try starting the game while the device is in airplane mode (there could be an issue logging in to xbox live, but that's less likely). You can also try uninstalling the game, making a copy of the /sdcard/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds (to backup his worlds), deleting the com.mojang folder, reinstalling MCPE then running the game. If it runs fine, then restore the minecraftWorlds folder.
