When the owner of a world uses /setmaxplayers to change the maximum player count of their world, it says it changed but the count actually stayed the same. This has been an ongoing issue like ever since I found out that the command existed.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Join a world with multiplayer enabled
2. Run "/setmaxplayers"
-Any number works
Observed Rrdult:
The maximum player count will remain the same.
Expected Result:
From the perspective of someone that can join the world, the player count remains at 8.

Do you mean that the count doesn't update unless you go back to the main menu and then back to the Friends tab?

To be honest, it's been so long since I reported this issue that I forgot I even reported it. On top of that, I havent been messing with the command much either probably because of this bug (and probably because I forgot that command existed as well.) But, I believe the problem had been that the command would say in the chat, if the command is run error-free, that the maximum player count was changed successfully but I don't think it shows it. I'd imagine on the friends tab the world would still say its maximum player count is 8 instead of whatever it had been changed to, for regular worlds not realms.
I figured I can test to see if it's still a problem my making an alternate microsoft account to do so. However, I don't think I can at the moment. While I have 3 devices that I can play Minecraft Bedrock Edition on, currently only 1 of those can I actually play online on. And, I do not have enough money on the stores of either of the other 2 devices to redeem even the cheapest online plan. So, it may be a while before I can test it. If i can remember to, I'll notify you when I can test it.
