Cherry tree leaves decompose after placing a log on the tree

So I'm trying to make a larger cherry tree by building off of an existing one but every time I place cherry wood on the newly grown tree the leaves start to decay.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Plant cherry tree sapling 

  2. Bone meal sapling

  3. Place additional cherry wood block on newly grown cherry tree

  4. Break cherry wood block
