Steps to reproduce:
Select Settings > Touch > Control Mode > D-Pad and tap to interact
Look for an option to have classic d-pad controls
Expected results:
You can choose between classic or new d-pad touch controls.It should be optional not mandatory to use the new d-pad
Observed results:
There is no option to use classic d-pad.The new d-pad buttons do not work correctly because everything new brings problems and is uncomfortable for the player who is used to the old d-pad

I have been seeing this issue too. It is really hard for me to control my character on mobile or my touchscreen laptop with the new buttons. Also, I don't like double tapping the down button when flying. I prefer pressing the button twice in the middle of the up and down arrows when flying.
Also, another great feature is to bring back the D'pad from the Minecraft Pocket Edition Alpha days. However, I much prefer the old buttons before they got updated in 1.20.70 Beta/Preview. Please change it back to how it was. I play on iPad. Now I have to re-train my brain to learn how to move again without looking at the buttons. This is quite awful.

One thing I've noticed is that on an iPad 10th gen (the one without a home button) the D-Pad is located higher than previously and the experimental feature to rearrange the controls is not able to move them back to the lower position due to boundary issues with the inventory and new d-pad size.

I am also in favour of adding the D-pad layout (and texture )prior to 1.20.70. I don't like how you have to double tap the down button to stop flying and the spacing between the arrows is inconsistent to the original d-pad. Also when turning on experimental control layout, the buttons get smaller. It'd be best if the location/size of the buttons didn't change when turning this feature on, for people who only want to change the opacity. Prior to this update, The sneak/jump button, in between the arrows, would change size when turning experimental control layout.

Change is hard, but this change breaks touch navigation. The biggest complaint is that the gaps between the navigation arrows don't seem to be part of the new D-pad interface... if you start moving forward by touching the upper arrow and then decide to move right by dragging your finger to the upper right arrow, the moment your finger leaves the upper arrow, the upper right arrow disappears from the D-pad and you start interacting with whatever is behind the D-pad (ex: you start digging instead of moving). I really hope this issue gets resolved soon. If you want to introduce the new D-Pad, it has to be an option, just like when you introduced other types of controllers. The D-Pad makes the whole playing experience very unenjoyable, I might not be playing if the issue doesn’t get resolved soon. I am so disappointed.

The new D-pad changes make the game borderline unplayable on large mobile devices. Please revert this change (the old one was great - well laid out, transparent, and easy to learn and use).

I'd also say that they should add a toggle to go back to the old version of the controls anyways. I like to play with my controls invisible (meaning muscle memory has been a big factor in gameplay) and I think we can all agree that learning a new, more buggy control system is not going to fly with some people. I could barely play at the time of the update and I feel lucky that they didn't just put the new buttons as retextured versions of the old ones.
Plus, I now have to redo the resource packs. (That's a me problem, we don't worry about that) :/

I logged back on here after 4 or so years just to complain about the new horrible D-pad and am so glad I am not the only one upset by this. I’ve been playing Minecraft for almost 11 years with the old D-pad with no issues or complaints whatsoever.. but this? 😞

this is a problem for 2 reasons.

2: you can't strafe right on the dpad anymore (or move from the center button (I use jump (swapped jump and sneak))) to the right arrow, it makes the touch circle appear beneath the arrow (throwback to 1.18.63).
Also for some reason the dpad is just further towards the center of the screen from the left side when using the default control settings. I tried moving it back with the "customize controls" thing but I can't, it doesn't save for some reason.
Anyways please fix, I can't move properly rn and will have to connect a controller to play on my ipad for the foreseeable future, and people without that option may not be able to play at all.
Also I'm convinced mojang doesn't have the mobile updates playtested, if you need someone to do that for you hit me up I'd be happy to help.

Like many others, I cannot play on iPad now. I just dug a hole in the floor just trying to walk forwards, and my thumb hurts from stretching - I have large hands, so if I am struggling, everyone will struggle..

This update was unneeded and ridiculous, please change it back as the game is unplayable, especially for people like me who have poured years into the game and its controls. Muscle memory means we cannot use the controls now!

A lot of people are (rightly) saying muscle memory should not be discarded so easily. But they might shrug at that. I think more critically the new arrangement doesn't work even for new users – the gaps are too big so you can try to move forward but fall between the buttons and destroy something with the pickaxe you're holding, and, even worse (it's real life) the stretch to reach the new D-pad is unsustainable and will lead to versions of RSI for anyone using a tablet. They managed to make this a health and safety problem!

I play on my laptop (Windows 11). I can no longer reach the d-pad with my thumbs. It's very big now and too far to the right. I have to use my index finger now, which makes it very awkward because I can't hold onto the back of the monitor-part of my laptop to steady my hand. Due to the "up" button disappearing when reaching the top of scaffolding, the scaffolding can be unintentionally broken, resulting in falling / death.

When sprinting and jumping, the JUMP button (the one in the middle) is incomplete. By what I mean is that when I sprint and jump and I slightly move my finger to the lowest zone in the JUMP button (shown in the image attached), I stop sprinting, like if I lifted my finger from the FORWARD button and placed it on the JUMP button when actually I just slid my finger from one button to another to keep sprinting and jumping at the same time.

Issue has not been rectified. Still experiencing the same issues with the Dpad controls and the hot bar is still affected and unusable

the gap between these keys is too much, that's not how it was before, and it also increases as you increase the size of the d-pad, this makes it very different from how it was before.

This new update did not fix anything. I do not see a change. It would be better if you just reverted it back to the old D-pad that worked.

As of 1.21.0, this is still an issue. Maybe add a 4th option that uses the old one instead. Or let the player move each individual button in the customize controls menu.

As others have said, this issue has not been resolved. The option to revert to the old d-pad controls has not been added, as many requested. While I can now change the size of the direction pad, it is unneccessarily large and takes up too much of the screen because it isn't as compact as the old one was (still a lot of space between the buttons). And because of where I have to put the jump button in the new UI, with the latest update (where the "swim up" button is tied to the jump button) it now almost totally overlaps with the "swim down" button. When in water, I can't avoid pressing both "swim up" and "swim down" with the same tap because they overlap and I can't change this back in the new update.

For everyone who is unsatisfied with the final result of this report, please note that the changes implemented allow for the almost perfect recreation of the old control scheme (with more customization), other than the button textures. Since the textures have been updated to match the new style that Mojang has designed for touch controls, I do not foresee them reverting this change (or providing a setting that reverts the change). If you do not like these, you can find texture packs online which use the old textures (searching "old touch controls minecraft texture pack" should provide a plethora of options). The buttons in the new setup do seem to be slightly farther apart than the old ones, but I've found that their effect (considering slide-off persistence and size customization) is pretty much negligible, and it could just be a visual thing. Personally, I would say that the fix was initiated well and would like to thank the developers for finally fixing this critical bug (I would also ask that they not attempt to continue "updating" touch controls, because these break things more than they "improve" anything).

This issue is not fully resolved, when updated my swimming and flying controls have become overlapped and are difficult to use. Also the hotbar is still challenging to use as to select blocks I am still having to tap just below the hot bar and not on the actual item as that just places blocks randomly instead. Its not all about the appearance id be happy to use the new texture only if it was actually functional

Can the controls come back how they were. I am getting more frustrated with this game every update so annoying! I like the arrows with the fly up and down on the right and the move pad on the left with arrows I only play creative.
