When I was flying and used fireworks the fireworks took 3 hearts per firework and killing me with the messege "[username] went off with a bang"

That's because you're using rockets with rocket powder. If you don't want to get hurt, just make rockets but without the gunpowder. That is, just put 1 Paper and 1 Powder on a crafting grid for your rockets to work correctly.
