When using the TAB key to autocomplete commands (recently mostly fixed in 1.21), the caret disappears, unless you use the arrow keys to move it or refocus chat
Notes: • For some reason, the expanded Command Block view is unaffected. • Chat tabbing will work properly for a few seconds when you enter typing mode by pressing TAB
