Mechanism that should appear on blue square is absent. There were no ad on other than those that came in the game. As I played through the game, the characters prompted me to interact with them and when the time came to interact with the mechanism, it was not there. I reloaded the game, restarted my iPad, but nothing worked.

There's supposed to be a plunger for a fireworks display. That's a real shame that it didn't show up at all for you. I've been reading that a lot of people are experiencing bugs including myself. Leave feedback to the creator via the marketplace and rate the game. Hope more people report issues directly to mojang.
