When playing a world that reaches over 500mb there is massive lag experienced by the user. This is when graphical settings are on the lower end, and using a well-specced machine. This is most often triggered when travelling by boat, but happens when moving on foot too.
Suggestion that an advanced option be given to users that allows larger worlds to be held in RAM for those users with enough memory to spare.
The game doesn't seem to use the GPU properly either.

Working As Implemented.
This is how LevelDB works. Give it some time to defragment the database, and it will eventually stop lagging the game.

😞
Confirmed on 1.0.4.11 / iPad Pro. When my world bloated up to 420MB it started to lag quite badly, even without any resource packs or shaders.
FPS drops when new chunks are getting loaded from save data.
FPS drops more severely when you change something in the terrain (and thus causing chunk data to be overwritten).
Loading and saving the world sometimes takes more than a minute, and sometimes takes only a few seconds. And when the game takes minutes to close a world, the world file size usually decreases. So I guess this has something to do with LevelDB database compaction.
