Steps to reproduce
Spawn a copper golem.
Get a potion of night vision (3:00) and a potion of night vision (8:00) and place them in a copper chest.
Place a wooden chest.
Expected result
The copper golem places both potions in the wooden chest.
Observed result
The copper golem places one potion in the wooden chest, but will not place the second potion in the wooden chest.
This bug also affects armor if the copper chest contains enchanted armor and the wooden chest has an unenchanted counterpart or vice versa. If, between the two armors, they have different enchantments or different versions of the same enchantments (protection 3 vs protection 4), this bug will still occur.
It also affects tools with different durability values. A fresh wooden sword vs a slightly used wooden sword will cause this bug.
This bug will also occur if one of the items have been named differently but are otherwise identical. This bug will not occur if the renamed blocks have the exact same name.
However, if two different items share the name, the bug will occur.
Other situations:
-Undamaged anvil vs damaged anvil
-Uncooked food vs Cooked food
-Tipped arrows of different durations
-Normal compass vs compasses calibrated by lodestones (Addendum 1: i have left a tipped arrow from the previous test and after removing the target item from the chest, the copper golem did NOT deposit the item it was holding. Chest must be empty for the copper golem to deposit the item.)
-Same type of armor. different material, regardless of enchantments
-Infested stone vs Regular stone
-Different ore blocks (Addendum 2: I placed one stone block in each chest along with the different ores and the copper golem prioritized the first block in the copper chest regardless of likeness between pairs OR order in the wooden chest.)
-Stone axe vs Stone Sword
- Iron Axe vs Gold Sword

Since we can only track one issue per report, I am updating the summary to refer only to potions. However, I expect that this is working as intended, because Allays behave the same way.
The issue with not matching items with different durability is tracked MCPE-223755.
This seems to be working as intended. Different items are sorted differently. Renaming and item makes it different from the normal item. A copper chestplate with a particular enchantment is different than an unenchanted copper chestplate.
Referring to the other comment referencing allays: allays do not distinguish based on item “subproperties” like a custom name, durability, enchantment, etc. except for the special case of various potions. It would be quite cool if golems cared about these “subproperties” for all items while allays didn’t, or vice versa.
Thank you for your report!
However, this issue is Working as Intended.
Please note, that mechanics of the game may change between updates.
Things such as graphics, sounds, world creation, biomes, redstone, villagers, and animals may not work the same in current versions.
