Summary:
On all Bedrock Edition platforms, shields cannot be activated using the standard right‑click / use‑item input. Instead, shields require the sneak action to activate, a legacy behavior originally implemented only to accommodate early mobile controls. Even though mobile now has a dedicated right‑click button, shields still do not use the correct input. Additionally, shields incorrectly apply knockback to attackers when blocking.
Observed Behavior:
Shields do not activate when using the correct “use item / right‑click” input across all Bedrock platforms (mouse, controller, touch, or mobile’s new right‑click button).
Shields can only be raised by using sneak, which is not how shields are intended to work.
When a shield blocks an attack, the attacker is knocked back, even though blocking should not apply knockback.
Both players and mobs are affected by this incorrect knockback behavior.
Expected Behavior:
Shields should activate with the use‑item / right‑click input (mouse right‑click, controller LT/L2/ZL, mobile right‑click button, etc.).
Blocking with a shield should not apply knockback to attackers.
Steps to Reproduce:
Open Bedrock Edition on any platform (Windows, console, mobile).
Equip a shield in the off‑hand.
Attempt to activate the shield using the platform’s standard “use item / right‑click” input.
Observe that the shield does not activate.
Press sneak and note that the shield only activates through sneaking.
Optional: Block an attack and observe the attacker being knocked back.
Impact:
Shield activation on Bedrock is outdated on every platform, not just mobile.
The current behavior exists only because Bedrock originally had to support early mobile controls that lacked right‑click, and this workaround was never updated.
With mobile now having a proper right‑click input, Bedrock should allow shields to activate normally — but does not.
This leaves combat and controls inconsistent with Java and unintuitive across all devices.
Incorrect knockback on blocking disrupts parity and affects both PvP and PvE.
Additional Notes:
Other right‑click interactions (e.g., using items, placing blocks) work correctly on all platforms, including the new mobile right‑click button.
This issue appears to be specific to shields, not the control scheme itself.
Please do not put more than one bug in each report. The first issue is working as intended per MCPE-43599, and the second issue is not a valid parity issue, as it was introduced prior to Buzzy Bees.
