i was playing on a friends world and i logged off to go have dinner and when i logged back on all my stuff was gone and i was in a completely different place than where i was when i logged off

Are you sure it was exactly the same world? Your friend could have switched to another world that you have never played and then you rejoined as a new player to that world.
