Controller input won't register

When trying to play Minecraft Bedrock on PC through the Minecraft Launcher, controller input doesn’t register in the game. They do however register in the Minecraft launcher. I’m using a Switch Pro Controller (for switch 1), but I’ve seen people have issues with other types of controllers too.

How to reproduce:

  1. Connect a controller to the PC.

  2. Open Minecraft Launcher. (Controller input works)

  3. Press “play” to open Bedrock.

  4. Press any button. (No input is registered)

  5. Open any world.

  6. Press any button. (No input is registered)

Expected results:

Controller input should be registered, move your cursor in menus and move the character etc when opening a world.

Actual results:

No controller input is being registered in the game, but they do work in the Minecraft Launcher. Controller input in the Launcher still works if you have Minecraft Bedrock open in the background.

Workarounds:

Opening Steam and enabling “global controlls” (or whatever it’s called) will make Minecraft register controller input. However, since the pause menu is mapped to the “Home”-button (on Switch pro controller at least), if you have Steam overlay turned on, the Steam overlay will open when you press the “Home”-button and will overwrite your controller input. I believe other players have found other 3rd party apps to work, but Minecraft Bedrock should and have previously had controller support, so using 3rd party apps shouldn’t be needed.

Please try running the Xbox Gaming Services Repair Tool and see if that fixes the issue.
