In my base, I have around a 40 block drop into a water source next to a dispenser with a bucket inside and on top of the extension of a regular piston. However, when I leave the world and re-enter, the dispenser picks up the water.
Here's how to recreate it
Place your water block about two blocks in the air
Place a button on the inside of the chute on the second block above the water. On the other side of the button, place a redstone torch.
Place a dispenser with an empty bucket facing the water, behind the dispenser, place an observer facing away from it. In front of the observer, place a redstone dust on top of a spruce plank.
Below the dispenser, place a piston facing the same direction as the dispenser
Connect the redstone dust to the piston by placing it under the observer
Finally, connect the redstone dust the observer is facing to the button and redstone torch.
Take the water out of the dispenser, place it in the same spot, then put the empty bucket back in the dispenser. (This extra step for some reason is required as the game crashes for me if I put the water bucket in the dispenser :/)
Leave the world, re-enter, and then the bucket will be filled inside of the dispenser. Needing to be reset
