Due to MC-307323, the generation of the sulfur cave biome on the surface is considered an intentional game feature. However, in Bedrock Edition, sulfur cubes fail to spawn on the surface during daytime because their spawn conditions are missing the "minecraft:spawns_on_surface": {} component. In Java Edition, surface-level sulfur caves correctly spawn sulfur cubes on the surface, creating a version parity inconsistency between the two editions.
Steps to Reproduce:
Create a new world in both Bedrock Edition and Java Edition using the seed
934598.In each world, navigate to the coordinates
49 95 -62.Set time to night (due to sulfur cubes currently spawning as monsters with low light requirement in Bedrock Edition, MCPE-239039.).
Observe the mob spawning behavior on the surface.
Observed Results:
In Java Edition, sulfur cubes spawn on the surface. In Bedrock Edition, no sulfur cubes spawn on the surface at all.
Expected Results:
Bedrock Edition should spawn sulfur cubes on the surface in surface-level sulfur cave biomes, matching the behavior observed in Java Edition.
Note: Adding "minecraft:spawns_on_surface": {} to the spawn rules will fix this behavior, along with adjusting the sky light and block light conditions required by sulfur cubes. For the incorrect light level requirements of sulfur cubes, see MCPE-239039. However, to avoid unintended behavior, I recommend adding a "minecraft:height_filter": {"min": x, "max": x} filter for surface spawn rules in order to prevent potential erroneous behavior.
