Bedrock Edition: Editing at Y = -63 causes chunk sections to be deleted (16×16 void holes)

When modifying blocks at Y = -63 (near the bottom of the world), chunk sections can become corrupted and are saved as air. After reloading the area, entire 16×16 chunk-aligned sections at Y = -64 are missing, creating permanent void holes.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Go to Y = -63 in any world Modify blocks (placing/removing, or loading structures)

  2. Leave the area so chunks unload Return to the area

  3. Observe missing 16×16 chunk sections at Y = -64

Expected Result:

Bedrock layer remains intact

Actual Result:

Entire chunk sections are deleted and replaced with air Additional Notes: Occurs in multiple worlds

Not using addons or texture packs, Holes are always 16×16 and chunk-aligned, Gravity blocks fall into the void, Issue does not occur at Y = -62 or higher

HOW YOU DO IT: make sure your render distance is a maximum of 9 chunks. go to a location in a world, then dig down to y=-63 and place a structure block, then go into the structure block and save a structure that is 64x40x64 blocks (Must be all air), then name it something like “air”. Then place structures at offsets (0,0) (64,0) (64,64) (0,64) (-64,64) (-64,0) (-64,-64) (0,-64) and (64,-64). Now you should have a 3x3 grid. We need a 5x5 at minimum, so do offsets (128,0) (128,64) (128,128) (64,128) (0,128) (-64,128) (-128,128) (-128,64) (-128,0) (-128,-64) (-128,-128) (-64,-128) (0,-128) (64,-128) (128,-128) and (128,-64). Then look around the entire room (this may take a few times) around the edges, because the holes usually form around the edges. There should be at least one 16x16 chunk aligned hole there in the bedrock at y=-64, opening up the void.

Note: if you do this at y=-62 or higher, it will not work.

What does “chunk sections” mean here? Does a 16×1×16 region at the bottom of some chunks get deleted by this bug?

Ever since I made this, the total number of holes has gone up to 99, I have also found a few ways to prevent holes from forming

  1. Make room at different y-level

  2. Place at least one block on the bedrock

  3. Remove a block of bedrock and then place it back

MAJOR UPDATE: I did an experiment at y=-48 and a void hole DID form, y=-48 and y=-64 are both the bottom layer of chunk sections (16x16x16 parts of chunks) so I wonder if they have something to do with the bottom block of the chunk section, void hole count: 104 and counting

In the screenshot, you can see that instead of the floor being bedrock, it is deepslate

I left my world right after making a tiny room, 64x64 blocks and only one void hole (was kinda weird) this was a brand new superflat world. I come back to see the entire floor is gone. 16 void holes. I expand the room and leave again, this time, the 16 void holes becomes 68 (52 more). All of them are in 1 massive cluster.

Void hole count: 172

Superflat worlds are much worse in void holes. In the past few days I have found over 200 more with clusters so big the floor is basically gone. NEVER DO THIS IN A FLAT WORLD AND LOG OUT BECAUSE THE FLOOR WILL DISAPPEAR.

void hole count: 370

This is no longer a bug, this is a catastrophe, the void hole count has gone up so rapidly that it is unimaginable.

Here you can see there are a few bedrock chunks that are literally surrounded by void holes.

Void hole count: 1,032
