Parity: Abandoned camp structures use different spread_types between Java and Bedrock

In Java Edition, the structure set placement for the new abandoned camps defaults to a linear spread distribution (the implicit default for minecraft:random_spread). However, in Bedrock Edition, the structure layout is explicitly configured with a triangular spread_type. This creates an uninentional world-generation parity gap, resulting in structurally clustered camps on Bedrock and uniformly distributed camps across identical seeds on Java. Both versions of the game use the modern jigsaw structure generator, so with identical definitions, the campsites should generate at the same location on both versions of the game.

The pertinent sections of each jigsaw structure set definition appear as follows:

Java Edition:

 "placement": {
   "type": "minecraft:random_spread",
   "salt": 91231127,
   "separation": 8,
   "spacing": 34
 },

Bedrock Edition:

"placement":{"type":"minecraft:random_spread","salt":91231127,"separation":8,"spacing":34,"spread_type":"triangular"},

How to Reproduce:

  • Create a new world in both Bedrock Preview and Java Snapshot 7 using seed -3958196391093013056.

  • In Java Edition, there are two abandoned camps within 200 blocks to the east and northeast.

  • On Bedrock Edition, there are no abandoned camps located within 300 blocks of spawn. Nearest is around 400 blocks to the northwest.

Could you please specify where these placement rules can be found?

On Java Edition, the placement rules are in the snapshot .jar file in the following packaged file:

\data\minecraft\worldgen\structure_set\abandoned_camp.json

On Bedrock Edition, the placement rules are in the following when installed on Windows 11:

C:\XboxGames\Minecraft Preview for Windows\Content\data\behavior_packs\vanilla_1.26.50\__brarchive\worldgen\structure_sets.brarchive

Because there is only one new family of structure in 26.50, the only feature_rule present in the recently switched-to optimized brarchive format is for the abandoned camp.

Correction: I mistakenly referred to the placement rule as a feature_rule above; I meant to say structure_set. Also, it is noted the spread_type on Bedrock has already been changed to β€œlinear” in 26.50.26 Preview with the spacing raised from 34 to 37 to help avoid village collision.

It appears that in Java Edition, the spacing has been raised to 37 as well. Does this mean that the issue is now resolved?

Yes! With both versions using linear and a spacing of 37 and verification in snapshot 9/Preview 26 that camps are at the same locations, the issue is resolved. Thanks!
