Resource pack using inventory_item_renderer permanently disables Vibrant Visuals toggle

A resource pack UI control using "renderer": "inventory_item_renderer"

permanently disables (greys out) the Vibrant Visuals graphics toggle

while active. The lockout persists after leaving the world and

returning to the main menu, and is only cleared by fully

removing/uninstalling the pack — simply deactivating it is not enough.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:

1. Confirm Vibrant Visuals is selectable in Settings > Video > Mode

with no resource packs active.

2. Import the attached minimal repro pack (CAC_Test_Renderer_Only.mcpack).

It contains only a minimal manifest.json (no capabilities, no

subpacks) and a single ui/hud_screen.json that inserts one HUD

control using "type": "custom", "renderer": "inventory_item_renderer"

bound to a compass icon via "#item_id_aux".

3. Activate the pack on a new or existing world.

4. Enter the world.

5. Observe: Vibrant Visuals becomes unavailable/greyed out while in-game.

6. Leave the world back to the main menu.

7. Observe: Vibrant Visuals is still greyed out at the main menu,

outside any world.

8. Fully close and relaunch the app with the pack still installed but

deactivated.

9. Observe: the toggle remains locked until the pack is fully removed,

not merely deactivated.

EXPECTED RESULT:

A resource pack using inventory_item_renderer for a HUD icon should not

disable Vibrant Visuals, or if there is a genuine incompatibility, the

toggle should return to normal as soon as the pack is deactivated, not

require full removal, and should not persist across menu navigation.

ACTUAL RESULT:

Vibrant Visuals becomes permanently unselectable as soon as a pack

containing an inventory_item_renderer control is activated, and the

lockout persists beyond normal pack deactivation.

ISOLATION TESTING PERFORMED:

Narrowed down through systematic elimination using a larger real-world

pack ("Clock And Compass HUD") that displays live compass/clock/

recovery-compass icons in the HUD:

- Removing the "pbr" capability from the manifest — issue persisted

- Removing subpacks / memory_tier — issue persisted

- Removing the #item_id_aux property bag values entirely (empty panel,

no icons, no renderer) — issue resolved, Vibrant Visuals worked

normally

- Re-adding a single inventory_item_renderer control with no other pack

content — issue reproduced

As a control test, a separate, more invasive resource pack (a "Night

Vision" pack overriding materials/terrain.material with custom legacy

shaders and ALWAYS_LIT, using a complex custom gradient_renderer-based

HUD overlay with a collection_panel factory) was tested and did NOT

disable Vibrant Visuals, despite modifying hud_screen.json and using a

custom UI renderer type. The only meaningful UI-renderer difference

between the two packs is inventory_item_renderer vs. gradient_renderer,

pointing specifically at inventory_item_renderer as the trigger rather

than custom HUD modification or hud_screen.json editing in general.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

This may relate to inventory_item_renderer invoking an off-screen 3D

item-render pass (to resolve live item state/rotation/lighting for the

dynamic icon) that isn't reconciled with the deferred/Vibrant Visuals

rendering pipeline, causing a persistent capability lockout rather than

a graceful fallback. This is speculative and not confirmed against

engine source — flagging only as a possible starting point.

This is not caused by inventory_item_renderer. Neither of the packs you provided is defined as PBR-capable in manifest.json, which is why Vibrant Visuals cannot be enabled. Once the packs are defined as PBR-capable in the manifest, Vibrant Visuals can be enabled without any issues.
