Gameplay freezes while trying to autosave

Summary

After a long gameplay session, the game suddenly froze and became completely unresponsive. It happened just after exiting a Nether portal. The autosave icon appeared very briefly, then disappeared when the gameplay froze.

Trying to recover my current gameplay session from this freeze, I did the following:

Step 1 - Suspend the game and put the Switch to sleep

I suspended the software, went to the Nintendo Switch Home menu with the Home button on the controller and then restarted the game from the suspended state without success. Still frozen.

Then I tried it again but this time, putting the Switch to sleep for 5 minutes or so, then I turned the Switch on again and tried to resume my gameplay session without success. Still frozen.

Step 2 - Close the game

Then I decided to close the game completely with the X button on the controller and something odd occurred.

  • The “Closing software” dialogue took quite some time to work and remained visible longer than usual.

  • Then it failed and a black screen error appeared with the message “There was a problem, and the software needed to close” without any error code.

Step 3 - Restart the game

When I came back, my world had the same cover of my last saved data so I thought I’d lost progress, however my session resumed a second or so before the freeze, to the exact point where I was exiting the Nether portal.

I didn’t lose progress so the autosave worked as expected I guess, however this happened to me once on 26.50 and it’s very frustrating with the potential risk of losing progress.
