Cannot change skins while in LAN multiplayer world / local wireless world on Switch

Switch players can’t change skins while in a cross-platform LAN multiplayer or local wireless, at first I thought of it being a desperate attempt to defeat workarounds (to issues I have with the Super Mario Mash-up Pack), which doesn’t make sense because this problem also affects skins and characters that are not gate-kept (platform-restricted), and it is still possible to change skins while in a world as a host, be connected with other Switches over Nintendo Switch Online, or if connected to a cross-platform multiplayer via Microsoft Account.

Steps to reproduce:

Method 1: Cross-platform LAN multiplayer:

  1. Make sure the Switch is signed out of a Microsoft Account, but has an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription

  2. With Minecraft open, go to play

  3. Enter a cross-platform LAN multiplayer world (can be seen with “LAN World” instead of “Friend’s world“)

  4. There, switch to third person rear / front view

  5. Open the pause screen

  6. Go to the Dressing Room

  7. Scroll to another skin / character (that is not from the Super Mario Mash-up Pack)

  8. Leave the Dressing Room and exit the pause screen

  9. Compare the skin / character in the pause screen and that in the world

Method 2: Local wireless:

  1. With Minecraft open on the first Switch, switch to local wireless

  2. Go to Play

  3. Enter a world

  4. On the second Switch with Minecraft open, make sure you have prepared some skins and characters in some slots, which can be created from the Dressing Room

  5. Switch to local wireless

  6. Go to play

  7. Enter a multiplayer world hosted from the first Switch

  8. In the world, switch to third person rear / front view

  9. Open the pause screen

  10. Go to the Dressing Room

  11. Scroll to another skin / character (that is not from the Super Mario Mash-up Pack, even so, it’s blocked by MCPE-243495)

  12. Leave the Dressing Room and exit the pause screen

  13. Compare the skin / character in the pause screen and that in the world

Expected result (see “Switch change skin in cross platform multiplayer.mp4“ for reference): The skin / character in the world should change to that from the pause screen.

Observed result (see “Switch change skin in LAN multiplayer.mp4“): The skin / character in the world does not change to one in the pause screen.

Workaround:

  1. Open the pause screen

  2. Go to the Dressing Room

  3. Scroll to a skin you’ll be equipping (that is not from the Super Mario Mash-up Pack)

  4. Leave the Dressing Room

  5. Click Disconnect in the pause screen

  6. Rejoin the world you were connected to
