There is this glitch on pocket edition. On the version 1.2.3 I tried recreating my skin but it turned black. Can you fix this. I don’t know if it’s me or if others are expierencing this. I am using an iPad mini 2 and the update on 1.2.3 it just look so weird. I wanted to change my skin to a warrior cat. I’ll test this out on my computer if this is the same problem. If anyone is expierencing this I could use some help if they know what to do

Does the skin have many transparent parts? If so, it might exceed the maximum allowable transparency, in which case it would show as black.

This is NOT resolved. How can ut be marked as resolved when it is still happening exactly the same as the original poster showed?

I have an iPad Mini 2. It is running iOS 11. I downloaded MCPE from appstore yesterday, February 24th, 2018. It is the most current version !!

I am attaching images to show you the entire sequence of actions in detail. They are numbered 1-10, and I’ve combined more than one image at a time into single images to upload fewer than 10.

I have done these steps over 10 times in all sorts of situations: reboot app. Restarted device, paused playing to go back out to try, tried it before playing, etc. etc.

It never shows anything no matter which skin I choose. I downloaded the skins from minecraftskins.com for PE edition.

I don’t want to use ANY skins from Microsoft marketplace. I don’t like any of them at all, and prefer my own choices. We shouldn’t have to be forced to buy theirs to be able to use something other than Alex. I am playing with others who all have their own skins, except me.

It is now Feb of 2018. The internet shows complaints about this since PE came to iOS, and it still is not fixed.

Why did you mark this resolved and not give any detail as to what you did to resolve it?? You make us first search past bugs before starting a new one. Well why? They don’t show how to fix it!!

I’m not enjoying being trapped with just Alex. It removes a really fun feature - and its one of the most common ones. Please fix!

Please check the resolution, it had been resolved as "Awaiting Response" whilst we waited to hear back from the original reporter.

Ticket reopened.

Could you please upload an example skin that is showing as black?

So the transparency causes the issue? Your reply to the original poster said it might exceed transparency guidelines. But now you think it isnt enough?

Anyway, if transparency is so fickle, then that would make sense for why so many people run into this problem for so long. There are three websites I visited for PE skins, and they all have download buttons that just open the image in another tab and you have to save from there. But the image is blurry and small.

Ok I’ll check out Discord, but I checked the links below before posting here. Its next to impossible to find help with skins that are showing black....unless you are Android, which has tons of help. But not iOS.

Discord is absolutely no help. Needle in a haystack. No channel specifically for PE either. What a hopeless feeling to go to all these sites and not find any help. When I go to Mojang “support”, they send us here. See image I have attached.

This was the best place to come for help on this issue out of all the other places and communities to go for help. It still is. Please don’t pass us off to those same “links” when they can’t help anyone with this issue and we are always referred back here. This is a bug issue, even if just in the documentation available to your players. FAQ is insufficient on this topic. Many of us need help and guidance with this, and Mojang needs clearer information about it in their FAQ.

OK, I got it to work. The only way was to use apps from the appstore specifically for MCPE Skins. They save it properly to your camera roll and it imports beautifully. Between four apps, I found a lot that were like the ones I loved, or similar.

It appears you can’t use websites with download buttons. The thumbnails are what gets opened up, and they are not the proper pixel size/formats. Sometimes .jpg and sometimes .png, but the pngs were not saved with transparency in tact.

I’d advise others with this problem to download the appstore apps for this and forget using the internet sites. All the apps also have an edit tool if you want to adjust/modify one. Make sure it specifies “PE”. Try a few. Don’t pay for them!! Not necessary. Plenty there free.

As an example, I’ll upload a picture of one so you can see the difference between the ones I uploaded before. The background on these are appropriately black for the transparency when looking at them in your camera roll, rather than the white background of jpgs or a png saved improperly. Thanks for your help Mega_spud. It set me looking in the right direction to solve it. (Suggest they explain some of this in FAQ for PE to help others quicker in future.)

Thank you for your report!

Any custom skins need to be valid .png files (not just renamed .jpeg files).

You can find plenty of community made skins on non-official sites such as http://mcpedl.com.

There is also more information about skins to be found on the wiki: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Skin

Just fyi for others that may search for this post, I DID download from mcpedl.com, and they were the same as the others I sent to you at first; actually one of those was from that site.

Also, I did use gamepedia. They quoted jpgs are accepted.

  • Under Java edition, “A player can only change their character's skin if they have purchased Minecraft. This is done on the Profile page by uploading a valid .png image file (note: .jpg files will be accepted), which will then replace the default skin.”

  • Then under PE, “Players can choose one of the two default skins either Steve or Alex, and can apply their own custom skin. (Uses the same format as the Java edition).”

  • However, even though it says jpg files will be accepted, jpg files cannot preserve transparency. Gamepedia says further down, “When editing the "steve.png" file manually, be sure to keep the original image dimensions and make the background of the skin (the unused pixels) completely transparent. Otherwise, Minecraft may fail to recognize the skin as intended.” And so their site contradicts itself. The transparency must have been the problem on so many sites, including mcpedl.com, specifically for saving the skin from a mobile browser. None of them work.

So like I said, for iOS PE, using another app for skins from the appstore seems to be the only way right now. I hope this info helps anyone searching for this as a bug.
