Combine Mending items on Anvil

The Mending Enchantment is one of the most rarest enchantments to currently get in the game. When I was doing AFK fishing, I received two treasure items (bow and fishing rod) with mending and I wanted to fuse them together with my current bow and fishing rod ASAP. When I used the anvil, and combined the two, the mending enchantment did not transferred over to the new item. So in the end, all I ended up doing was repairing my tools rather than receiving any new enchantments. Please fix this issue.

You can't have Mending and Infinity on a bow at the same time, so if your bow already had Infinity on it, the Mending enchantment may have cancelled out. I don't know what the problem is with rods; I have made dozens of Unbreaking III, Luck of the Sea III, Lure III, Mending I rods by combining those I got from fishing.

I haven't tested it in a while, but previously I noticed that when combining two items or two books, mending is only propagated if it is on the item (or book) in the left anvil slot. It works as expected if a single book is placed on an item. Sometimes this costs more xp, but the loss of the (RARE) mending enchantment was a big enough loss that I have used this work around ever since. Probably should be a new bug report if still true (and someone confirms it by making a test world, giving themselves the items in creative, and then switching to survival for the test.)

Note that the reason for closing the ticket (infinity is incompatible with mending) does not apply to the OP's mending fishing rod.

I was forced to use an anvil with a mending item on the right due to unexpected "too expensive" cost with the mending item on the left. The mending did stay on the combined item. (Worked correctly, 1.2.11)
