Hi,
after updating to Minecraft 1.2.13, the render distance (the bar in the graphics-settings) is now limited to a maximum of only 16 chunks!
Before that, it was always 56 chunks (I played at 40 chunks, still quite smooth).
There was no change in hardware, I always used the same tablet (Fujitsu Stylistic Q665, 8gb ram, Core-M 5y71), so it MUST be an issue of the 1.2.13-update...

Hey, I found a workaround, it's a bit awkward, but still better than nothing:
There is a config-file in which Minecraft stores its settings (I'm referring to the 'windows 10 edition' only). It's quite hidden in a folder called 'minecraftpe' – best chance to find it, is to use a search tool (I used 'Agent Ransack'). Search for minecraftpe (on your local harddrive, where Windows is installed), you will get at least 2 entrys; the right one is that with it's folder-path ending as '...\com.mojang\' (NOT the one ending with '...\LocalCashe).
Best thing is to create a desktop-shortcut for this folder, so you can change the render distance without searching for it everytime.
Now, in this 'minecraftpe'-folder there's a text file called 'options' – open it, and there are all game-options listet as text.
The line "gfx_viewdistance:XYZ" sets the render distance!
It is measured in BLOCKS, not chunks; 16 blocks = 1 chunk (in my example, I set the value to 640 – that's 40 chunks).
The altered value will be saved as long as you don't CHANGE the render distance ingame (then you'll have to alter it manually again).
Just be careful not to mess around with those files. Also: the Minecraft-performance has worsened in 1.2.13 (before that, I could play 'OK' with 40 chunks, now I had to reduce it to 32)...
Hope that helps (and also, that Mojang will still fix this render distance issue)!

Mine dropped to 11 chunks from the 32 that I kept it on. Kind of a bummer and it used to go much much higher which was good for exploring.
