In the middle of enchanting items with a table, the phone rang and I answered. When I restarted Minecraft I found that I had lost 25 pieces of lapis that were in the table and a diamond helmet I had just enchanted with respiration (which was in my inventory, I'd just enchanted it.)

I didn't explicitly close it. I guess the act of answering the phone call put it the background because the phone app takes over. I'm afraid I can't remember whether I had to reload the world or whether it started back up where I left it, sorry.
If it had lost a couple of minutes of data then wouldn't it have reverted back to the previous state, with the lost items either in my inventory or in the chest where they were before that?
(Still sore about the enchanted diamond helmet. Had to work hard to get that!)

Did you close Minecraft or did you put it in the background? Closing minecraft without leaving a world properly causes the game to lose a few seconds/ minutes of gameplay data.
